Infants born prematurely are at a greater risk for developing both cognitive and motor development delays related to continuing their development outside the normal uterine environment. Because of the potential adverse effects of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) environment on the quality of life of premature infants and their families, researchers have investigated, developed, and tested different developmentally supportive interventions to improve outcomes and decrease the negative effects of the NICU. The majority of successful interventions are based on the Synactive Theory of Individualized Developmental Care (IDC)-a form of patient/family- centered care for the neonate.

Abstract

Problem Description: Breastfeeding continuation rates fall below the Healthy People 2020 goal of 60.6% for any breastfeeding at six months postpartum. In Navajo County, Arizona the breastfeeding rate for WIC participants was 36.9%. Breastfeeding provides health benefits to babies and women and decreased health care costs. A quality improvement project was developed and implemented with a pilot group of participants in a rural Northeastern Arizona community.

Interventions: After a thorough literature review, four interventions were selected. These included: development of a community health coalition, prenatal breastfeeding education, administration of a new baby tea event, and extended support …

BACKGROUND: Fetal movement count (FMC) is a non-invasive tool used to evaluate fetal well-being and prevent stillbirth. FMC decrease the chances of stillbirth occurrence (Tveit et al., 2009), but in other countries, research shows that women are not taught about the benefits of FMC (Berndl, O'Connel, & Mcload, 2013). The purposes of this study were to discover 1) the knowledge of pregnant women in their third trimester about FMC and 2) sources through which women learn about FMC.

Assistive reproductive technology has progressed significantly over the past few decades. In spite of the advances, people may still resort to a surrogate for bearing and birthing a baby. Surrogacy, though an altruistic act, has been commercialized in the past few years, leading to emergence of several ethico-legal concerns. Nurses care for the surrogates, the infants, and the intended parents through their journey with sensitivity, advocacy, compassion, and confidentiality. This article intends to explore the implications of surrogacy to individuals, families, nations, and health care.

In the busy neonatal unit where highly skilled healthcare workers are always present, parents have reported being stressed when caring for their preterm infants in the neonatal unit. In Ghana, preterm birth is the highest cause of neonatal mortality with 70% of these morbidities and mortalities occurring in the community. Background: In Africa, the clinical syndrome of pneumonia remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children in the post-neonatal period. This represents a significant burden on in-patient services. Background: At the site of this quality improvement project, exclusive breast milk feeding rates before discharge from a newborn nursery were behind benchmark goals. The aim of this project was to improve exclusive breast milk feeding rates by implementing a Pasteurized Donor Human Milk (PDHM) Program for breastfeeding newborns requiring medically indicated supplementation. The study site was a Level I newborn nursery of a 20-bed, labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum unit within a 100-bed community hospital (i.e., the agency).

Globally, in low and middle-income countries 4 out of every 10 pregnancies is reported to be unintended. Having an unintended pregnancy increases the risk of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, preterm birth, low birth weight, and decreases rates of breast-feeding. The United States (U.S.) consistently has some of the highest rates of preterm birth, infant and maternal mortality of all high-income countries and 45% of all pregnancies in the U.S. are reported to be unintended. Anxiety is common in pregnancies that occur after a miscarriage or perinatal loss and can lead to detrimental effects on the mother and fetus. The objective of this literature review is to examine whether caring-based nursing actions and anxiety-reducing interventions decrease the self-report of anxiety more than self-management alone. A literature search of four journal databases was conducted using related keywords which produced 429 studies for consideration. Despite this crisis, no single treatment has been identified for NAS. This paper sought to analyze and synthesize research evaluating the effectiveness of breastfeeding and rooming-in care on the need and length of pharmacologic treatment and length of hospital stay for neonates with NAS. •In 2012, our hospital expanded obstetrical services resulting in the delivery over 3700 infants per year.
•Approximately 35% of these infants had no relationship to a primary care physician with privileges at our hospital.
•These infants were either uninsured, Medicaid insured or privately insured but whose primary care physician did not have hospital privileges.
