BACKGROUND: In 2018, there were approximately 234,030 new lung cancer diagnoses and 154,500 lung cancer deaths in the United States. Kentucky leads the nation in new lung cancer cases each year. The USPSTF estimates that 10% to 12% of lung cancers detected by routine screening would not have been detected until the cancer advanced; therefore, the USPSTF recommends yearly lung cancer screenings using low dose CT (LDCT) scans of the chest for patients 55 to 80 years old who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and are currently smoking or have quit within the last 15 years.

Heart failure is a prevalent chronic disease that contributes to many hospitalizations that may not always be necessary. Evidence supports that patients who present to the Emergency Department in fluid overload can be treated in the outpatient setting when only IV diuretic is warranted. Both decreases in costs and improved outcomes have been reported, yet there has been little movement toward providing outpatient diuresis versus hospitalization. The best mechanism to achieve successful advance care planning has yet to be identified. A randomized, controlled, experimental study was performed with a sample of 54 men and women who met inclusion criteria and were randomized into the intervention versus the control group in an outpatient clinical setting in rural West Virginia (WV) from December 2018 to March 2019. Participant mean age was 72.4 years. The purpose of this paper was to review how APPs could help in a number of different areas of healthcare. This analysis examines the state of rural healthcare and reviews physician shortage statistics and hospital closures by state. In the examination, it also evaluates which states have full scope, reduced scope, and restricted scope of practice laws and cross-references that with states that have experienced a hospital closure. As the elderly population rapidly grows in the United States, the burden of managing infection in long-term care facilities (LTCF) escalates. The use of evidence-based infection identification algorithms for early recognition and treatment of pneumonia, urinary tract infections (UTI) and skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) was evaluated at a Midwest suburban 110-bed long-term care facility. This quality improvement project implemented 2017 Guidelines for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults. An in-service education session on the 2017 High Blood Pressure Guidelines was provided to clinical staff. In addition, the AHA/ACC pooled cohort 10-year risk calculator was installed to computer desktops or smart phones, for providers. “Seven simple tips to get an accurate blood pressure reading” (American Medical Association, 2016) was posted in exam rooms and proper measurement and documentation techniques were reviewed with clinical staff.
