Evaluation Of Pre-Procedural Phone Call Effectiveness Before A Colonoscopy, Rachel Schoelch

Dissertations

Abstract

Problem: Colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer in the United States (Gu et al., 2019). A colonoscopy procedure is the best diagnostic tool to evaluate the colon for pre-cancerous and cancerous polyps (Dang et al., 2020). Inadequate bowel preparation decreases colon visualization where adenomatous colon lesions may be missed.

Methods: Using an observational, pre/post design, a chart review was conducted for this QI project. Quantitative data comparing Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS) scores was collected on patients who received nurse-led phone calls one month prior to a colonoscopy, and patients who received phone calls one week prior …

Implementing Faculty Development Modules To Increase Readiness For Addressing Social Determinants Of Health, Implicit Bias And Equity In Course Content, Claudia Ngafeeson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Implicit bias is viewed as an unconscious and involuntary attitude that lies below the surface of consciousness but can influence behavior, and cognitive processes (Maina et al., 2018). Social determinants of health are considered to be the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age; these circumstances are usually shaped by the distribution of money, power, and resources at global, national, and local levels, which in turns determines the distribution of the value of medical care. Existing literature on implicit bias has been fragmented in different fields such as; cognitive psychology, business ethics, and higher education, but …

Prenatal Education For Black Mothers And Their Support Persons As An Intervention For Improving Initiation Of Breastfeeding, Sandra King

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: The benefits of breastfeeding are commonly known; however, the rates of exclusive breastfeeding among the Black community are less than those of other ethnic groups. Providing breastmilk or formula to an infant is an individual decision. Influential factors such as cultural background, employment status, socioeconomic status, level of education, and availability of support from family members and health care providers correlate with the method a mother chooses to feed her infant. Increasing breastfeeding initiation immediately after birth is a necessary precedent for uptake in the exclusivity of breastfeeding.

Purpose: This Doctor of Nursing Practice project aims to improve prenatal …

Does Nurses Confidence Improve After Attending A Training For Teaching Home Infusion Patients?, Carol Menorah Young Dnp

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Discharge can be a difficult step for patients and their families and a challenging task for nurses. Poor instructions have a negative impact on the patient population. In addition, improper and incomplete discharge information negatively affects the posthospital recovery period and may cause the patient to return to the hospital for the same episode of care. Returning to the hospital emergency room or readmission for the same episode of care will increase the dangers to the patient’s health and recovery plan and increase the cost of individual healthcare. The patient population ranks the quality of discharge information via their responses …

Decreasing Hospital Readmission With Post-Hospital Discharge Primary Care Clinic Appointments, David Snodgrass 2022 The University of Southern Mississippi

Decreasing Hospital Readmission With Post-Hospital Discharge Primary Care Clinic Appointments, David Snodgrass

Doctoral Projects

ABSTRACT

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) continue to apply costly financial penalties for hospital readmission. Hospital readmission can stem from multiple causes which can lead to poor health outcomes or increased healthcare financial costs. However, with the use of an implemented 14-day post-hospital follow-up appointment with a primary care provider, hospital readmission could be reduced, and patient care improved. The multiple factors that can lead to hospital readmission include non-adherence to medication, socioeconomic factors, patient-related factors, condition-related factors, or health system-related factors. Through the implementation of post-hospital discharge follow-up visits within 14 days of discharge, hospital readmissions …
