The Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale, Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale, and Post-Discharge Coping Difficulty Scale were developed by Dr. Marianne Weiss to measure nurse-sensitive discharge care processes and patient outcomes. Three versions of the scales were developed concurrently for different patient populations – Adult medical-surgical patients, Parents of hospitalized children, and Postpartum Patient mothers (see Weiss & Piacentine, 2006, Weiss et al., 2007, and Bobay et al., 2018 for description of the development and initial testing). Background: In the United States, 52.8% of Americans aged 18 and older consume alcohol, with 29.5 million suffering from alcohol use disorder (AUD). In Los Angeles, 69.8% of Angelinos aged 12 and older suffer from AUD, and 33% of annual arrests are due to alcohol and other drugs. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) develops after abrupt cessation of heavy drinking and is a common occurrence among incarcerated people when newly arrested, resulting in $1.3 billion in healthcare costs. Management of AWS using a fixed-dose therapy of benzodiazepines will improve the utilization of healthcare services in the correctional setting.

Background: Hypertension affects nearly half of the population in the U.S., with the prevalence disproportionately higher in African Americans (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023). Complications of uncontrolled hypertension, such as cardiovascular disorders and stroke, increase with age, prompting the importance of controlling high blood pressure in older adults. Risk factors include abnormal low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, physical inactivity, and unhealthy diets. African American (AA) adults have higher mortality rates from CVD than other demographics. In Houston, Texas, age-adjusted death rates for CVD per 100,000 population by race in AAs were 111, 85.0 in Whites, 62.9 in Hispanics, and 49.5 in Asians.
