Poor communication is identified as the root cause for the majority of sentinel events in hospitals, including wrong site surgery, medication errors, and failure to rescue. Interdisciplinary rounding (IDR), a long-standing practice in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), provides a forum for communication and collaboration and has been linked to improved patient outcomes. In addition, emergency nurses have been shown to have high levels of stress, irregular meal schedules, rotating shift work, long hours, and a lack of physical activity. BACKGROUND: Oversedation in the mechanically ventilated patient can cause long- and short-term adverse side effects. Light sedation practices provide patients with relief from agitation and pain and still allows them to actively participate in care. A light sedation protocol was introduced to bedside ICU registered nurses (RNs) at the University of Kentucky Medical Center (UKMC), but deep sedation is still commonplace. Reeducating bedside RNs and increasing their knowledge and confidence is a proposed strategy for increasing adherence to light sedation protocols.

Methods: This project used a descriptive, non-randomized pre-post survey design. Participation involved three stages: a pre-education survey to assess baseline concussion education knowledge, an educational intervention consisting of a narrated PowerPoint presentation, and a post-education survey to evaluate knowledge on concussion discharge education. Introduction: Sepsis is a serious and life-threatening syndrome affecting 1.7 million Americans annually and resulting in approximately 270,000 deaths. An “obesity paradox” where obese individuals have lower sepsis mortality than their non-obese counterparts has been described. The problem is that the longevity of the effect is unknown, and few studies have examined the obesity paradox after 1-2 months post-diagnosis.
