Nurse Initiated Sepsis Protocol In The Emergency Department Setting, Madilyn Siuta, Michelle Kaulback
Nursing Student Work
Sepsis affects hundreds of millions of patients across the world within various healthcare settings. Sepsis protocols vary between health systems and institutions which can lead to the lack of prompt client intervention. Each one hour delay in administration of antibiotics is associated with an 8% decrease in survival (Rhodes et al., 2017). The vision for this project is to explore the potential benefits of implementing a standardized national sepsis protocol. For this EBP project a PICO question was formulated. In adult patients presenting to the emergency room with suspected sepsis, how does a standardized international nurse lead sepsis screening protocol, …

Within the operating room (OR), the ability to identify deteriorating patient conditions and effectively communicate, is essential to delivering safe and efficient care. Although rare, the critical nature of emergent events necessitates early recognition and prompt intervention by an experienced anesthesia provider. The complexity of emergency management is often related to diagnostic ambiguity, individual provider experience, and disruptions of the fast-paced OR environment, requiring appropriate training methods for proficient execution. However, student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) often lack sufficient exposure to emergent clinical scenarios, leading to delayed intervention and diminished confidence during crisis management. An evidence-based simulation education guideline for …

Scholars Week
The purpose of this project was to create a handoff tool implemented post-operatively by anesthesia providers during every transfer of care with patients undergoing open heart surgery and transitioning to the intensive care unit. Communication errors have been identified as a primary cause of anesthesia-related sentinel events, particularly during patient handoff, which can lead to negative patient outcomes due to incomplete relay of information. This Quality Improvement Project was conducted at a single facility where Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, (CRNAs) incorporated a handoff tool into their anesthesia handoff following coronary artery bypass graft surgery over a six-week period. Both pre- …

Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) is a collection of symptoms that more than half of patients who survive a critical illness experience after discharge. Those symptoms include weakness, fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive dysfunction, post-traumatic stress disorder, mental health conditions, and a lack of effective coping strategies. PICS can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, complicating the recovery process and posing challenges for reintegration into daily activities and societal roles. The etiology of PICS is multifactorial, with the severity and duration of the illness, the nature of medical interventions in the ICU, and the pre-existing health condition of the patient all …

Assessing Nursing Deployment Readiness-A Literature Review, George Mcenroe
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Air Force nurses must be prepared for deployment to support military missions on short notice. During deployments, they may be asked to practice in demanding and austere wartime environments. The required competencies for deployment include the care of multi-trauma patients, military vehicles and aircraft, mass casualty care, and military-specific skills. Many Air Force nurses work in low acuity roles and do not maintain the clinical competency and skills necessary if called upon to deploy. A deployment notification may happen with little notification, limiting the opportunity for a quick “ramp-up” of critical skills. Maintaining deployment and clinical readiness is an ongoing …

Understanding The Importance Of Administrative Mental Health Support For Frontline Nurses Post Covid-19, Sarah Mah
Nursing | Senior Theses
During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, intensive care units and critical care units were overwhelmed with the number of patients that were on the floors. It was during this time that nurses were experiencing the most mental health decline.
Several factors can be associated with the rapid decline of nurses’ mental health. However, these issues could ultimately stem from the lack of action taken by healthcare administration. This includes increased workload and the lack of PPE, resources institutional support. Because these units played such a vital role during the pandemic, it is imperative that healthcare administrators do what they …

Neuroprognostication In Patients With A Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Quasi-Review Of Anti-Inflammatory Agent Administration Versus Blood Pressure Management, Julia Gabalski, Marcie Mcmahon
Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research
A subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a type of stoke where a blood vessel bursts and causes the subarachnoid space to become filled with blood. Traditional nursing management of SAH includes close monitoring of blood pressure goals in order to prevent complications such as vasospasm. Vasospasm causes delayed cerebral ischemia and neurological deficits secondary to the initial injury. Recent research has expanded understanding of the underlying mechanisms behind the neuroinflammatory cascade that occurs after a SAH. In this study, a methodical search was conducted through the CINAHL and PubMed databases to form a quasi-review of current research. The comparison of traditional …
