Our project advocates for state mandated nurse-to-patient ratios in Tennessee critical care units to enhance patient safety, reduce nurse burnout, and improve overall healthcare quality. Research shows that inadequate staffing leads to higher mortality rates, complications, and longer hospital stays, while hospitals with mandated ratios report better patient outcomes and nurse retention. California’s model demonstrates the effectiveness of such policies, highlighting the need for nationwide implementation. The project follows an SBAR approach, outlining the situation of unsafe staffing, the background of financial-driven disparities, and the need for policy change. Background: This study addresses the gap in education and training for medical intensive care unit (MICU) nurses regarding the care of hospice patients. The traditional medical model of healthcare prioritizes illness treatment, often leading to inadequate end-of-life support and increased hospitalization during patients' final days. The rise of in-hospital hospice programs, or scatter-bed hospice models, highlights the need for nurses to enhance their skills in providing end-of-life compassionate care. The MICU at the University of Kentucky’s Chandler Hospital serves as a focal point for this initiative, given its role in caring for critically ill patients who require hospice attention.

Objective: This evidence-based practice project aimed to reduce HF readmission rates through a bundled approach to address socioeconomic factors that place patients at higher risk for readmission, provide patient-centered education for HF management at home, and provide follow-up phone calls after discharge to assess patient symptoms.

Background: Moral distress, burnout, and compassion fatigue in acute care nurses has increased significantly since the Covid-19 pandemic and has been associated with high levels of nursing turnover and increased costs to healthcare systems. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project attempted to increase nurse’s knowledge of aseptic technique when placing USG-PIVs in hospitalized adult patients after educational training on the Aseptic Non-Touch Technique Clinical Practice Framework (ANTT CPF). Implementation of the ANTT CPF in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) at Ruby Memorial Hospital, as a didactic educational session for nurses already trained to place ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines, was utilized for this DNP project. Background: Early palliative care in intensive care units improves outcomes and reduces costs, yet referrals are often delayed. At J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital’s medical intensive care unit (MICU), baseline median time to consultation was 112 hours (mean=246), exceeding recommended benchmarks and highlighting the need for a standardized process.

Introduction/Background: Adult hospitalized medical and surgical patients at an academic medical center are being transferred out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to the step-down floor and having rapid response calls in less than 48 hours after the transfer. Nurse intuition is not a consideration in the decision to transfer a patient. Physiological variables such as Modified Early Warning Scores (MEWS) and vital signs are relied on heavily as indicators for escalation or de-escalation of care. Mechanically ventilated ICU patents often require sedation for comfort and ventilator compliance. However, oversedation is linked to negative outcomes such as delirium, prolonged ventilation, and increased duration of ICU stay. Current best practices now support the use of daily sedation interruptions such as Spontaneous Awakening Trials (SATs).
