Peripheral MStim provided protection against chronic EtOH withdrawal symptoms and dependence-induced insensitivity of ventral tegmental area (VTA) GABA neurons to ethanol reintroduction. Behavioral indices of withdrawal were substantively ameliorated with concurrent MStim treatment. These findings suggest the need to explore the specific role of mechanoreceptor-based therapies in the treatment of substance abuse.

The Effects Of Rosiglitazone On Task Specific Anxiety-Like Behavior And Novelty Seeking In A Model Of Chronic Adolescent Unpredictable Stress, Hannah Sexton, Nathan A. Olszewski, Mary-Louise Risher
Biomedical Sciences
Adolescence is characterized as a period of increased social behavior, risk taking, and novelty seeking, partly due to ongoing maturation in critical brain areas and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) negative-feedback system. During this period there is heightened vulnerability to stress that can drive neuro-immune-endocrine remodeling, resulting in the emergence of maladaptive behaviors that increase susceptibility to alcohol and substance abuse. Here we used a rat model to investigate the impact of chronic adolescent unpredictable stress on a battery of behavioral measures to assess anxiety, novelty seeking, risk taking, depression, and voluntary ethanol consumption while determining whether the PPARγ agonist rosiglitazone can …

BACKGROUND: An increase in opioid use has led to an opioid crisis during the last decade, leading to declarations of a public health emergency. In response to this call, the Houston Emergency Opioid Engagement System (HEROES) was established and created an emergency access pathway into long-term recovery for individuals with an opioid use disorder. A major contributor to the success of the program is retention of the enrolled individuals in the program.
METHODS: We have identified an increase in dropout from the program after 90 and 120 days. Based on more than 700 program participants, we developed a machine learning …

Current treatments for substance use disorders (SUDs) are far from ideal, with no U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved pharmacotherapies to treat stimulant and other use disorders. New approaches are urgently needed to combat the increasing prevalence of SUDs and overdose deaths. It is widely accepted that addiction is a chronic disease of the brain involving changes in neural circuitry associated with cognitive and reward functioning. Brain stimulation techniques are novel methods that can modulate these circuits directly and thus hold considerable promise for treating SUDs.

Background: The Houston Emergency Opioid Engagement System was established to create an access pathway into long-term recovery for individuals with opioid use disorder. The program determines effectiveness across multiple dimensions, one of which is by measuring the participant's reported quality of life (QoL) at the beginning of the program and at successive intervals.
Methods: A visual analog scale was used to measure the change in QoL among participants after joining the program. We then identified sociodemographic and clinical characteristics associated with changes in QoL.
Results: 71% of the participants (n = 494) experienced an increase in their QoL scores, …

Background
Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use are among the most prevalent and important health disparities affecting sexual and gender minority (SGM; e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) populations. Although numerous government agencies and health experts have called for substance use intervention studies to address these disparities, such studies continue to be relatively rare.
Method
We conducted a scoping review of prevention and drug treatment intervention studies for alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use that were conducted with SGM adults. We searched three databases to identify pertinent English-language, peer-reviewed articles published between 1985 and 2019.

With the rise of accidental fentanyl overdoses and recreational opioid use in college-aged populations, the need for campus-based overdose prevention and harm reduction measures is at an all-time high. Naloxone, an opioid antagonist, is an FDA-approved, lifesaving, medication which can be intranasally delivered by laypersons. Naloxone reverses opioid overdose, essentially buying time until an overdosing individual receives emergency medical attention. While some previous studies have examined access to naloxone on college campuses, to my knowledge no study has explored distribution of naloxone in residential college areas, such as dormitories and within Greek housing. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was …
