Today’s physicians are being confronted with an increasing number of challenges and opportunities as our evolving healthcare system progresses into the future. The expectation is not only to provide the best clinical care, but also to satisfy metrics, fulfill budgets, achieve high patient satisfaction levels and accomplish institutional requirements in order to be considered good providers. All these additional demands seem to be affecting not only the clinical performance of physicians but also their wellness, increasing the risk of burnout, depression and suicide.

One challenge facing healthcare training programs is balancing the need to provide students with interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice (CP) opportunities in the context of highly prescribed standards-driven curricula (e.g. nursing and speech-language pathology). An infusion-based approach is an option for institutions and standards-driven programs that do not have specific IPE/CP courses or open electives in their curriculum.

Welcome to the fall 2020/winter 2021 issue of the JCIPE newsletter. 2020 was a year like no other. We witnessed and weathered the impact of the COVID pandemic in a variety of ways, and felt it on nearly every aspect of our professional and personal lives. We also collectively witnessed atrocities too numerous to count, resulting from the deep-seated systemic racism that is intrinsically tied to health disparities and inequities in this country.

Focused Hospital Medicine Cme On Pulmonary Point-Of-Care Ultrasound Through Just-In-Time Training During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Matthew Buttarazzi, Kristen Bartlett, Katherine Stebbins, Monica Thim

Introduction: We describe the use of focused CME with just-in-time training in pulmonary point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for hospitalists as part of our response to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This training served as a pilot for developing a longitudinal training program for our inpatient adult medicine providers.

Methods: In mid-March 2020, ultrasound education and image review were deployed within hospital medicine at a large academic medical center. Faculty were provided (1) a small-group lecture focused on ultrasound findings in pneumonia, (2) weekly review of imaging, and (3) a monthly review conference of ultrasound imaging.

Low-level foam specialty support surfaces are negatively affecting the number of hospital-acquired pressure injuries that occur each year and overall skin health of acute care patients. Lack of knowledge by wound care specialists on different types of therapy could lead to patients not receiving the best possible specialty surfaces available. An online anonymous survey of 19 certified wound care nurses was conducted. The survey examined the nurses’ knowledge of pressure injuries using the Pieper Zulkowski Pressure Ulcer Knowledge test (PZPUKT) and choice of specialty support surface for prevention of pressure injuries. Continues Professional Development (CPD) activities are life-long learning engagements for general practitioners. It can enhance their medical competencies across cognition, psychomotor and affection domains, hence upholding safety and quality of healthcare services. Literature reported that motivation drives learning among general practitioners. However, limited studies explored the motivation from an educational lens. This study explored motivation(s) from the Andragogy and Self-Determination Theory perspectives in promoting active learning among general practitioners. This study also explored their perceptions of the amended law enforcement in Malaysia that mandates CPD participation.
