A Descriptive Study Of Health-Related Risks And Outcome Differences By Loneliness Status In A Sample Of Older Veterans, Rachael Beard 2021 University of Missouri-St. Louis

A Descriptive Study Of Health-Related Risks And Outcome Differences By Loneliness Status In A Sample Of Older Veterans, Rachael Beard

Dissertations

There is a need to understand the influences and outcomes related to loneliness in veterans living with complex illness. Patients require self-care to manage complications and exacerbations associated with complex illness. Deficits in self-care result in negative health outcomes and drive resource utilization upward. The identification of potential factors related to self-care is important. Loneliness may be one factor that influences patients’ ability and desire to care for themselves. Descriptive correlational design was used to evaluate loneliness both as a predictor and outcome in veterans admitted to the hospital for three complex respiratory illnesses (heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, …

Development And Implementation Of Computer-Based Learning Modules On Alternative Communication For Pediatric Nurses And Nursing Students, Amanda Kaye Simmons 2021 University of Tennessee Health Science Center

Development And Implementation Of Computer-Based Learning Modules On Alternative Communication For Pediatric Nurses And Nursing Students, Amanda Kaye Simmons

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Purpose and Rationale. To develop, implement, and assess computer-based learning modules (CBLs) on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) with pediatric nurses and nursing students for knowledge outcomes, self-efficacy, and perceived relevance and effectiveness. Effective communication ensures all parties can understand and express themselves clearly, through any means necessary, often including AAC tools, supports, and strategies. Communication is essential in healthcare but there is limited research with pediatric nurses. Previous research with a single hospital indicated a need for nurse education on AAC. This research used focus groups and interviews to understand pediatric nurse and nursing student knowledge about AAC. The …

Disruptive Communication Among The Interdisciplinary Team: Gaining Insight And Providing Nurse Education, Kristen Marie Anderson 2021 Pittsburg State University

Disruptive Communication Among The Interdisciplinary Team: Gaining Insight And Providing Nurse Education, Kristen Marie Anderson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

The purpose of this study is to identify what types of disruptive behavior nurses are experiencing, discuss outcomes of disruptive behavior, and educate healthcare providers and administrators of disruptive communication. Understanding the consequences of disruptive communication can help educators articulate the need for training in conflict management and therapeutic communication methods. It can also aid healthcare providers to be more conscious of their behavior in the professional setting. Seven research questions related to communication were developed and analyzed in this study. The author developed a pre-education survey that included demographics, multiple-choice questions, and open-ended questions to assess the nurses' knowledge …

A Comparison Of Live Vs. Asynchronous Ipe In Physical Therapy And Physician Assistant Students: A Randomized Cohort Study, Erin McCallister, Emily Weidman-Evans, Amanda Bernard, Ashley Fort 2021 LSUHS-Shreveport School of Allied Health

A Comparison Of Live Vs. Asynchronous Ipe In Physical Therapy And Physician Assistant Students: A Randomized Cohort Study, Erin Mccallister, Emily Weidman-Evans, Amanda Bernard, Ashley Fort

Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration

Interprofessional education (IPE) is a required part of the curricula for many healthcare professions. The literature cites many limitations to successful implementation of IPE including logistics, coordination of curricula, and adequate meeting space. In order to overcome some of these logistical limitations, the investigators sought to determine if an asynchronous IPE activity produces similar outcomes as the same activity delivered in a traditional “live” format. Students enrolled in the first year fall semester of two consecutive cohorts of the Physician Assistant and Physical Therapist educational programs were eligible to enroll. They were randomly assigned to either a live or asynchronous …

Evidence-Based Practice: Delaying Infant Bathing, Gabrielle Wadle, Grace Frankland 2021 Murray State University

Evidence-Based Practice: Delaying Infant Bathing, Gabrielle Wadle, Grace Frankland

Scholars Week

A hospital's policy regarding infant bathing is currently not congruent with best nursing practice. The hospital’s current policy is to bathe an infant once they are stable and their rectal temperature is at or above 98.6 °F. Although the infant may become stable within the first 24-hours of birth, the World Health Organization recommends that, “Bathing should be delayed until 24 hours after birth.” (2013, p. 4). Research has been completed to support delaying infant bathing until 24 hours post-delivery, suggesting potential modifications to current policy.

Physicians’ Emotional Intelligence: Improving Performance While Reducing Burnout, Miriam Zylgerblait Lisigurski, Umair Shaikh, Brian Toston

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Today’s physicians are being confronted with an increasing number of challenges and opportunities as our evolving healthcare system progresses into the future. The expectation is not only to provide the best clinical care, but also to satisfy metrics, fulfill budgets, achieve high patient satisfaction levels and accomplish institutional requirements in order to be considered good providers. All these additional demands seem to be affecting not only the clinical performance of physicians but also their wellness, increasing the risk of burnout, depression and suicide.

Leadership, Anthony Pearson-Shaver, Evan Layton 2021 Palms West Hospital

Leadership, Anthony Pearson-Shaver, Evan Layton

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Though they become responsible for leading teams and supervising more junior learners early in their career, physicians receive little formal leadership training. The “see one, do one, teach one” approach to behavioral modeling and mentorship does not serve the modern young physician well. The complex nature of modern healthcare demands that physicians learn to work within the teams they will often come to lead. Within these teams, members often look to physicians to fill leadership roles. This review will examine effective leadership as defined by the business community, review attempts to incorporate leadership training into graduate medical education programs and …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

One challenge facing healthcare training programs is balancing the need to provide students with interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice (CP) opportunities in the context of highly prescribed standards-driven curricula (e.g. nursing and speech-language pathology). An infusion-based approach is an option for institutions and standards-driven programs that do not have specific IPE/CP courses or open electives in their curriculum.

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Over the past few years, I've had the honor to represent Pathways to Housing PA in the interprofessional collaborative work with JCIPE on the project called ESHP (Enhancing Services for Homeless Populations). This partnership opportunity was as much exciting as it was needed. Many professionals in the healthcare field have the driving compassion and desire to improve someone's life; after all, staying healthy is one of the most important aspects of life. While many who choose to work in a health profession strive to deliver the best service, young healthcare professionals have very little practice and/or knowledge on how to …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Welcome to the fall 2020/winter 2021 issue of the JCIPE newsletter. 2020 was a year like no other. We witnessed and weathered the impact of the COVID pandemic in a variety of ways, and felt it on nearly every aspect of our professional and personal lives. We also collectively witnessed atrocities too numerous to count, resulting from the deep-seated systemic racism that is intrinsically tied to health disparities and inequities in this country.

The pain and adversity has made this a dark time in our history, yet, has enabled us, individually and communally, to heed and recognized historically marginalized voices, …
