Implementation Of Telephone-Based Medication Adherence Conferences To Improve Health Outcomes Of Heart Failure Patients, Diana Marie Broadway 2021 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Implementation Of Telephone-Based Medication Adherence Conferences To Improve Health Outcomes Of Heart Failure Patients, Diana Marie Broadway

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Student Works

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been a significant health problem worldwide and is the leading cause of death globally. Heart failure (HF) is a chronic progressive form of CVD that affects millions of adults in the United States. The treatment for heart failure is very complex and requires an ongoing regimen of medications. In heart failure, many patients report nonadherence to their medication regimens, which leads to a magnitude of preventable deaths annually. With frequent medication nonadherence of the HF patients, there must be an intervention used to combat this problem. The use of telephone-based interventions (TBI) can modify nonadherent medication-taking …

Giving Pharmacists Provider Rights, Tanya E. Karwaki 2021 West Virginia University College of Law

Giving Pharmacists Provider Rights, Tanya E. Karwaki

Texas A&M Law Review

Changes to our health care system, robotics and health care mergers among them, are forcing pharmacists into expanded provider roles, yet federal policymakers are failing to act on these changes. State lawmakers are acting but not swiftly enough. A federal response, including recognizing pharmacists as health care providers and making them eligible for independent Medicare reimbursement, will be necessary to enable pharmacists to fill their role in our health care system. Policymakers have an opportunity now to respond proactively to a changing climate in health care by clarifying the boundaries on pharmacists’ services, particularly those boundaries regarding direct patient care …

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Introduction: High doses of activity-based rehabilitation therapy improve outcomes after stroke, but many patients do not receive this for various reasons such as poor access, transportation difficulties, and low compliance. Home-based telerehabilitation (TR) can address these issues. The current study evaluated the feasibility of an expanded TR program.

Methods: Under the supervision of a licensed therapist, adults with stroke and limb weakness received home-based TR (1 h/day, 6 days/week) delivered using games and exercises. New features examined include extending therapy to 12 weeks duration, treating both arm and leg motor deficits, patient assessments performed with no therapist supervision, adding sensors …

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Objective: Telerehabilitation (TR) is now, in the context of COVID-19, more clinically relevant than ever as a major source of outpatient care. The social network of a patient is a critical yet understudied factor in the success of TR that may influence both engagement in therapy programs and post-stroke outcomes. We designed a 12-week home-based TR program for stroke patients and evaluated which social factors might be related to motor gains and reduced depressive symptoms.

Methods: Stroke patients (n = 13) with arm motor deficits underwent supervised home-based TR for 12 weeks with routine assessments of motor function and …

Influence Of Telephone Preoperative Evaluations On Patient Medication Compliance On Day Of Surgery, Emmanuel Magsino, Michael Jung, Olga Suarez Md

Graduate Research Posters

Patient compliance with medication instructions on day of surgery (DOS) is an important part of the preoperative assessment, as failure to comply with these may lead to serious perioperative consequences. Prior studies have shown that compliance increases with multimodal interventions. However due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, many in-person visits transitioned to telephone visits and providers had to rely on patients to follow solely verbal instructions.

To determine medication compliance, this study compared the medication instructions provided by the VCU Preoperative Assessment Communication and Education Clinic, per chart review, with each patient’s own report of which medications they took on …

Sickle Cell Adhesion To Blood Vessels, Peace Okoko 2021 Bard College

Sickle Cell Adhesion To Blood Vessels, Peace Okoko

Senior Projects Fall 2021

Sickle cell disease is a hemoglobin disorder that occurs when there is a mutation on the hemoglobin gene. This leads to an irregular shape in sickle cells as compared to regular red blood cells. Sickle cells are also stickier than regular red blood cells because they contain higher levels of P-selectin, an adhesive molecule. The stickiness of Sickle cells can lead to them sticking in blood vessels, which in turn blocks oxygenated blood from reaching different parts of the body and eventually leads to a crisis. A crisis event causes extreme pain in the person experiencing it. A recent study …
