Background: Pneumonia is a costly and deadly respiratory disease that afflicts millions every year. Advances in pneumonia care require significant research investment and collaboration among pneumonia investigators. Despite the importance of data sharing for clinical research it remains difficult to share datasets with old and new investigators. We present CAPOCloud, a web-based pneumonia research platform intended to facilitate data sharing and make data more accessible to new investigators.

Methods: We establish the first two use cases for CAPOCloud to be the automatic subsetting and constraining of the CAPO database and the automatic summarization of the database in aggregate. We use …

Background: Reports from the 2009 H1N1 influenza A virus (2009 H1N1) pandemic indicate increased mortality in obese patients hospitalized with pneumonia. However, articles published prior to the pandemic have suggested that obesity may be a protective factor for mortality in these patients. The objective of this study was to compare the impact of obesity on mortality in hospitalized patients with pneumonia due to the 2009 H1N1 versus pneumonia due to other etiologies.

Introduction: Experts suggest a short duration of antibiotic therapy (DOT) in responding patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes after hospital discharge among patients treated with short-course antibiotic therapy (SCT) vs. long-course antibiotic therapy (LCT) for CAP.

Methods: A secondary analysis of the Community-Acquired Pneumonia Organization (CAPO) database from January 2007 to June 2013 was performed, including hospitalized CAP patients who reached clinical stability within 5 days. Abstract

Background: Transmissibility of several etiologies of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) may vary based on outdoor climate factors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of outdoor temperature, relative humidity, and absolute humidity on the incidence of hospitalizations for lower respiratory tract infections due to influenza, rhinovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Methods: This was a secondary analysis of an ancillary study of the Community Acquired Pneumonia Organization (CAPO) database. Background: Predicting if a hospitalized patient with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) will or will not survive after admission to the hospital is important for research purposes as well as for institution of early patient management interventions. Although population-level mortality prediction scores for these patients have been around for many years, novel patient-level algorithms are needed. This session will show how the Alternate Testing Program at Appalachian State University has utilized new practices and procedures to work in conjunction with faculty to ensure that students are effectively utilizing accommodations during tests. Mobile health units have become an extension of many healthcare organizations and provide different types of services, such as mammography. Informal or family caregivers contribute significantly to individual care, and to the Canadian healthcare system, yet receive limited support from governments, institutions, and healthcare professionals in recognition of their role, or in response to their health and social care needs – often due to the negative consequences of caregiving. Learning about the diversity of others’ experiences can positively influence personal decision-making, reduce feelings of isolation, as well as promote adjustment to a personal situation. Point of Care technology is an emerging healthcare field. This technology allows for rapid, inexpensive, on-site testing for otherwise lengthy and costly laboratory tests. Purpose of Study: Lack of access to pediatric subspecialty care is a major barrier to pediatric health for underserved populations in the Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland area. Lack of access to transportation, long office wait times, and missed school and work are barriers that prevent access to subspecialty care. Direct to consumer (DTC) telemedicine provides this service to our underserved population by bringing care into their own home through use of computers, tablets, and smart phones.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have become increasingly important in assessing clinical outcomes. However, acquisition of data at routine time intervals can be challenging. The ability of e-mail reminders to save follow-up intervals when office visits are missed is unknown.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of a consecutive series of 186 shoulder surgical patients who underwent surgery between October 2, 2012, and July 2, 2013, was conducted. Simple Shoulder Test and 12-Item Short Form Health Survey scores were completed at preoperative visits using office-based tablet surveys.
