Medical surge capacity in emergency departments is influenced by four critical factors: staff, stuff, space, and systems. Understanding these factors and the interplay between them is critical. Background: Bed capacity challenges at large academic medical centers delay the transfer of rural patients, negatively impacting their safety and quality of care. Repatriating inter-hospital transfer (IHT) patients to referral facilities upon completing specialized care can improve tertiary hospital bed capacity and community hospital financial sustainability.

Objectives: This project aims to identify the barriers and facilitators to successful IHT repatriation and the process and outcome variables influenced by the Nebraska Medical Center’s reverse transfer program.

This scoping review aims to identify available literature and research on substance abuse by healthcare workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic to examine whether the stress of their duties during the pandemic exacerbated existing issues of substance abuse.

Methods

A literature search using PubMed and Google Scholar using Harzing Publish or Perish identified 100 relevant professionally-authored, peer-reviewed, English-language academic articles published between 2015 and 2025 on substance abuse by HCWs. This quality improvement project utilized the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework to enhance oral hygiene practices in a long-term care setting for individuals with advanced dementia. Advanced dementia often leads to significant oral health challenges due to the individuals’ inability to communicate needs or independently manage oral care. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are a common issue in healthcare settings. These issues contribute to hospital-acquired infections and can lead to complications and increased healthcare costs. The quality project evaluated the impact of the HOUDINI guidelines nursedriven protocol to reduce infection rates and Foley utilization days. A structured guideline for Foley catheter safe removal was implemented using a quantitative method. The use of portable computed tomography (CT) scanners has been shown to reduce risks associated with intrahospital transport and to expedite imaging in critically ill patients. While their use is established in intensive care units, their utility on intraoperative trauma patients remains underexplored. This paper reviews existing literature on portable CT use, defines appropriate clinical indications, outlines contraindications, and identifies quality metrics and implementation challenges. Background: Meningitis often results in ongoing and multifaceted after-effects, which can impact many aspects of people's lives, yet relatively little support and follow-up is offered. This study explored post-treatment care experiences of UK adults aged 16 and over following a recent stay in hospital for meningitis. Methods: A survey was designed to ask about hospital discharge, recovery, information provision and aftercare support. The research involved 5 semi-structured, in-depth interviews and a 15-participant online asynchronous focus group. Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) are conditions that influence health outcomes. SDOHs are screened and addressed in many clinics and hospitals to reduce patients' social needs. Research indicates how unaddressed SDOH can negatively impact chronic illness, along with the daily life of pediatric patients. SDOH's role in pediatric patients includes food security, housing stability, access to healthcare, caregiver education, and parental mental health. Previous research has addressed these factors; however, the lack of staff education prevents effective compliance and follow-up on SDOH screening. Purpose/Background

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects one in nine women. It has distressing impacts, including behavioral and attachment issues and toveruse of healthcare services. PPD occurs within 4 weeks to 12 months postpartum. A scoping review was conducted to compare referral rates to mental health providers after PPD screenings were conducted via telehealth versus those completed at well-child visits.

Peer-reviewed articles published within five years before the initial search, beginning September 2022 and ending November 2024, were selected. Purpose/Background

Globally, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality during the peripartum and postpartum period in delivering people. Emerging evidence suggests that combining second-line uterotonics with tranexamic acid (TXA) improves maternal outcomes, reduces blood loss, and lowers morbidity and mortality related to PPH (Jones et al., 2023; Al-dardery et al., 2023). TXA, an antifibrinolytic, enhances clotting, reduces blood loss, transfusion needs, hemoglobin drop, and the use of additional uterotonics (Bellos & Pergialiotis, 2021). Accrediting agencies recommend safe and accurate transfer of clinical information during care transitions. At our institution, a tertiary care cancer hospital, ambulatory clinic providers use multiple methods for communicating essential information to emergency care providers. Therefore, we initiated a quality improvement project using a standardized electronic handoff during the transfer of care between providers at outpatient clinics and acute cancer care centers. The project was launched in May 2023 and aimed to achieve electronic handoff for 70% or more of ambulatory care patients transferred to emergency care by October 2023. Purpose/Background Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness that disrupts cognition, emotion, and social functioning, imposing significant personal and societal burdens. While antipsychotic medications are effective in alleviating psychotic symptoms, they are often associated with side effects, poor adherence, and relapse risk. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown promise as an adjunct to medication, addressing persistent symptoms and improving outcomes. Background: This study examines how the experience level of Registered Nurses (RNs) has declined while the incidence of hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) has increased from 2018 to 2022. Purpose: To evaluate the association between nurses’ experience level and patient outcomes, specifically HAPIs, on a state-by-state basis. Methods: Retrospective, observational study of Medicare patients hospitalized in 41 states using the Medicare 5% Limited Dataset. Nurse experience was measured by the date of first licensure using the Nursing Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN). Purpose/Background:This scoping review explores the effectiveness of adaptive support ventilation (ASV) compared to conventional ventilation modes in reducing postoperative extubation times in adults undergoing general anesthesia with ventilatory support. Ventilator weaning is a critical determinant of recovery and outcomes in intensive care settings. ASV, a closed-loop ventilation mode, automatically adjusts ventilator parameters based on patient-specific respiratory mechanics and demand to optimize the weaning process. Robust adolescent contraceptive counseling requires deep understanding of the specific context in which adolescents are receiving reproductive health care.
