This paper examines the role of accountability in the workplace. Accountability is defined as the need to justify or defend one’s actions to an evaluator who has potential reward or sanction power (Frink & Klimoski, 1998). While accountability is a growing research conversation among scholars, more focus needs to be dedicated to understanding how the dispositional traits of employees interact with workplace accountability mechanisms. Specifically, this manuscript explores the interaction of personality and the accountability environment on employee performance. During the third week of August 2013, President Barack Obama presented two policy speeches furthering his rationale for higher education reform. Stressing themes of institutional accountability, efficiency, and affordability, Obama sketched out a three point agenda aimed at making higher education a “better bargain” for America’s struggling middle class. This paper explores the consent process in relation to academic, scientific research. Consent is a human right given to each research participant. The participant’s autonomy should be supported and encouraged when obtaining informed consent. This paper reviews current literature and discusses the development of this right, in addition to the manner in which scientific researchers should uphold it.

From the early twentieth century to the present, citizen participation in U.S. public institutions—particularly schools—has continually decreased. The trend has been linked to the bureaucratization of public schools and their increasing reliance on expert knowledge for solutions to school- and education-related problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a parent training program designed to increase a school district’s capacity for public participation by parents and other citizens. The program—known as Leadership St. Vrain—provided citizens knowledge about school district operations and management (know-how) and relationship-building opportunities with key decision makers (know-who). Patient safety has always been a central focus of nursing practice. Current research makes it increasingly clear that what occurs in the surrounding health care environment impacts patient safety. The protracted nursing shortage and nurse turnover may adversely affect patient outcomes and are exacerbated by an environment of disruptive behavior, conflict, and poor communication in the nursing workplace. The Joint Commission has identified these behaviors as key elements that jeopardize the "culture of safety" necessary to assure safe, quality patient outcomes. In 2012, the Medicare program paid private health plans $136 billion to cover about 13 million beneficiaries who received Part A and B benefits through the Medicare Advantage (MA) program rather than traditional fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare. Private plans have been a part of the program since the 1970s. Debate about the policy goals—Should they cost less per beneficiary than FFS Medicare? Should they be available to all beneficiaries? Should they be able to offer additional benefits?—has long accompanied Medicare's private plan option. This article describes the benefits and constraints of telemedicine, focusing primarily on the field of psychiatry in the United States with the current system of healthcare. Telepsychiatry is believed to provide better access and higher-quality care to patients who need psychiatric care and cost savings to providers of such care. Telemedicine has been successfully integrated into psychiatric facilities reaching rural areas, prisons, and urban facilities. It has increased the volume of patients that physicians can reach and diagnose, as well as allowing them to treat patients with limitations in mobility. Cms's Proposed Rule Implementing The Aca-Mandated Medicaid Dsh Reductions, Kathryn Linehan

National Health Policy Forum

State Medicaid programs make Medicaid disproportionate share hospital (DSH) payments to hospitals to help offset costs of uncompensated care for Medicaid and uninsured patients. Unlike most Medicaid spending, annual DSH allotments for each state are capped. Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA), DSH payments will decrease starting in fiscal year (FY) 2014 and continuing through FY 2020. This paper describes the proposed rule for reducing these federal allotments, which was released on May 15, 2013, by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Comments on the proposed rule are due July 12, 2013.
