The ability to work in teams is one of the most highly valued professional skills. Preparing students to operate effectively in workplace teams, therefore, is naturally a priority for business and management faculty. Managing course-based teams, however, can be a challenging and complicated process for many instructors. This article offers instructors practical solutions to those challenges. The sex trafficking of minors is a hard-to-detect and underreported crime. Its insidiousness makes it exceedingly difficult to recognize, and treatment, once a victim is recovered, is long-term and costly. Urban areas are in the spotlight when it comes to the trafficking of minors. However, the unsuspecting rural context consists of specific dynamics that may make children in the countryside more vulnerable than in the city. Using the case of an Oklahoma town, the researchers conducted a presentation on child sex trafficking for school personnel at a K-8 rural school. This session will share lessons learned from the four-year implementation of a pain-care pathway across 45 patient-centered medical home (PCMH) clinics in Oregon. Leveraging the PCMH team, communication, and data to improve pain management and reduce risk, Providence Medical Group was able to realize a 68% reduction of patients on high-dose opioids. An inpatient unit in an acute care hospital was designated as an Innovation Unit. This unit was challenged with the creation of culture change in regards to process improvement. The team learned to use Improvement Science to facilitate rapid and innovative process improvements. These changes have enhanced the quality of healthcare provided while decreasing cost. The poster highlights some of the Improvement Science processes, forms, and roles of the team as well as some of the projects and successes.

Notable improvements included:

1. Patient visit times decreased 27 minutes per patient

US health surveys consistently report that men and those with higher socioeconomic status (SES) engage in more physical activity than women and lower SES counterparts, using questions that ask about physical activity during leisure time. However, social characteristics such as gender and SES shape understandings of and access to leisure-based physical activity as well as other domains where healthy activity is available – namely house work, care work, and paid work. Thus, the physical activity of US adults may look different when what counts as physical activity expands beyond leisure activity.

Social, health, and environmental policies are critical tools for providing the conditions needed for healthy populations. However, current policy analyses fall short of capturing their full potential impacts across the life course and from generation to generation. We argue that the field of Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD), a conceptual and research framework positing that early life experiences significantly affect health trajectories across the lifespan and into future generations, provides an important lens through which to analyze social policies. Intensive courses (ICs), or accelerated courses, are gaining popularity in medical and health professions education, particularly as programs adopt e-learning models to negotiate challenges of flexibility, space, cost, and time. In 2014, the Department of Clinical Research and Leadership (CRL) at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences began the process of transitioning two online 15-week graduate programs to an IC model. Certain areas, such as rural communities in Tennessee, experience health disparities because of their location and distance from health care providers. This gap in care can be diminished through the use of telehealth services. This research project is taking place to gather data from hospitals in Tennessee currently providing telehealth services. The purpose of this study evaluated the impact of information governance (IG) on healthcare organizations. Objectives and limitations were derived from literature reviews, case studies, and surveys. A methodology of evaluation research with a focus on summative evaluations was conducted. The population study consisted of health information management (HIM) professionals, consultants, data analyst, and other healthcare professionals. The findings from the research provided significant evidence supporting the value IG programs possess along with the benefits healthcare organizations gained with the adoption of the IG initiative.

The Texas Children’s Hospital’s Advanced Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (AQI) Program is a six month mixed didactic and experiential learning experience designed to improve patient care, lower costs, change the culture, and develop quality leaders. As a part of AQI program participants are grouped into teams and each team completes a healthcare related Quality Improvement (QI) project. Each project demonstrates use of various QI tools including process maps, fishbone diagrams, and key driver diagrams.
