Advancing Clinical Practice Through Integration Of Congenital Cytomegalovirus (Ccmv) Testing With Newborn Hearing Screening At Mayo Clinic, Joscelyn R. K. Martin, W. Charles Huskins, Lisa A. Schimmenti, Shelagh A. Cofer, Gayla L. Poling

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Although cCMV is the leading non-genetic cause of childhood hearing loss in the United States, neither targeted nor universal screening protocols have been well established to identify cCMV in newborns. Moreover, until cCMV testing is universal, clinical protocols need to account for the complexities of individualized care in partnership with interprofessional care teams. This work addressed an immediate clinical practice need to identify cCMV with subsequent hearing monitoring of babies who test positive for cCMV. This effort focused on three primary objectives to: 1) define interprofessional, team-based approach to facilitate care pathways; 2) develop a clinical workflow for all babies …

HPD Articles

Background

Collation of aphasia research data across settings, countries and study designs using big data principles will support analyses across different language modalities, levels of impairment, and therapy interventions in this heterogeneous population. Big data approaches in aphasia research may support vital analyses, which are unachievable within individual trial datasets. However, we lack insight into the requirements for a systematically created database, the feasibility and challenges and potential utility of the type of data collated.

Aim

To report the development, preparation and establishment of an internationally agreed aphasia after stroke research database of individual participant data (IPD) to facilitate planned …

Building A Pipeline Of Bilingual Slps To Serve Dual Language Learners: An Inclusive Model Of Interprofessional Education, Sonja Pruitt-Lord, Alicia Escobedo, Jennica Paz, Carol Robinson-Zañartu

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Speech-language pathology graduate programs do not reflect equity across racial and ethnic groups. Training programs must adopt an anti-racist stance and intentionally and strategically plan for equity and inclusion of students and professionals who are Black, Indigenous and Persons of Color (BIPOC). Retention of minoritized students must be supported by inclusion efforts. The authors review systems of support essential to the recruitment and retention of BIPOC students in graduate programs. Through funding support from a grant, the authors developed a model of training bilingual SLP students to work with dual language learners through an inclusive model of interprofessional education. Finally, …

The Creation Of A Multicultural Foundational Course: From Research To Practice, Audrey M. Farrugia

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The American Speech Language Hearing Association requires that multicultural content be included in graduate communication and sciences disorders programs. However, there is a paucity of research on the ways that this is achieved. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail a multicultural course created from best practices gathered from research literature, conference presentations, and syllabi sources in communication sciences and disorders and share student reflections of the created course. Student feedback from this study shows that foundational courses can improve cultural competency but careful consideration of discussion format and time dedicated to communities should take place.

Sexual Dimorphism In The Functional Development Of The Cochlear Amplifier In Humans, Sri Mishra, Samantha Zambrano, Hansapani Rodrigo 2021 University of Texas at Austin

Sexual Dimorphism In The Functional Development Of The Cochlear Amplifier In Humans, Sri Mishra, Samantha Zambrano, Hansapani Rodrigo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Objectives:

Otoacoustic emissions, a byproduct of active cochlear mechanisms, exhibit a higher magnitude in females than in males. The relatively higher levels of androgen exposure in the male fetus are thought to cause this difference. Postnatally, the onset of puberty is also associated with the androgen surge in males. In this study, we investigated sexual dimorphism in age-related changes in stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions for children.

Design:

In a retrospective design, stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions were analyzed from a cross-sectional sample of 170 normal-hearing children (4 to 12 years) and 67 young adults. Wideband acoustic immittance and efferent inhibition measures were analyzed …
