Oregon Population Estimates and Reports

This report provides population estimates for Oregon and its counties and cities for the years 1980 through 1993. As mandated by Oregon law, the Center for Population Research and Census at Portland State University, acting on behalf of the State Board of Higher Education, annually estimates the July 1 population for each county and incorporated city in Oregon. These figures are certified on December 15. When certified, the population estimates are used in the allocation of certain state tax revenues to cities and counties.

Oregon Population Estimates and Reports

Population estimates for 1992 show that Multnomah County (605,000) continues to have substantially more people than any other Oregon county. Washington County is the second most populous county (340,000}; Clackamas County (294,500) has surpassed Lane County (293,700) for the third most populous county. In 1991, Lane County had 2,200 more persons than Clackamas County (290,900 vs. 288,700). At the other end of the population spectrum, six counties have fewer than 8,000 people. Wheeler County has the smallest population (1,500) with Gilliam County (1,750) and Sherman County (1,800) also containing fewer than 2,000 persons. The other counties with fewer than 8,000 …

Because of the rather unique features of this community, a rather detailed explanation of the particular techniques used in this study follows. In addition, the report contains the rationale for the various assumptions that went into these projections.

Oregon Population Estimates and Reports

This report contains the estimates for each of the thirty-six counties and the 240 incorporated cities of Oregon from 1975-1986.

The estimates are based on data such as births, deaths, school enrollment, housing, number of privately owned passenger vehicles, income tax returns, voter registration, and other data which are sensitive to population movement.

The methods used to develop the estimates have been tested over a period of years by this agency, agencies in other states, and by the United States Bureau of the Census. These methods produce the most reliable population estimates that can be made.

The description and analysis of changes is made by state, district, county, incorporated cities and unincorporated areas. Attention is given to the increasing tendency for the population of Oregon to become an urbanized population as well as significant shifts in average household size.
