Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

This project is a plan to transform an under-utilized parcel of public land into a community asset. Through the analysis of construction, funding, site constraints, maintenance and stewardship options, the project team created a design concept and implementation plan for a parcel of land adjacent to the Interstate 5 freeway. The project team solicited input from community residents through a public involvement process and created an advisory committee consisting of stakeholders to provide guidance for the project. The plan documents the process of project initiation and the selection of alternatives. This plan may be used as a reference for enhancing …

The Kenton Connection is a proposed trail in the North Portland neighborhood of Kenton, connecting the future Interstate MAX light rail station in downtown Kenton to the 40-Mile Loop.

Confluence Consulting worked with a five member advisory committee, with members from Portland agencies and organizations, to assist in developing trail route alternatives. Confluence Consulting also conducted public outreach and education in the Kenton neighborhood to assess residents' preferences on route alignments and trailside amenities. Additionally, businesses and industries in the area were contacted and queried about their concerns and preferences for a connection.

This project examines Holgate Lake. Despite its natural hazard characteristics, the Holgate Lake area has not been immune to development pressure. Holgate Lake is an intermittent water body that forms when groundwater levels rise. Historical accounts show that the lake has formed at many different times in the last century. Because the lake fluctuates with the groundwater level, it is not necessarily present from year to year. As the area has developed, more and more people built in the location of the natural lakebed when the water was not present. When the lake level returned in the 1960's flooding of …

However, policy makers and technical assistance providers, such as the Workforce Development Board, as well as government agencies, also play a critical role in the region’s workforce development system. Urban growth boundaries are intended to encourage more development within the existing developed areas and save rural lands from urban sprawl. If this is true, why are there so many large areas of vacant land in the very heart of Portland? It is very likely that these vacant parcels of land are associated with the term "brownfields."

Brownfields are properties where expansion or development is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination on the site. Documentation of the gaps and/or redundancies in the provision of workforce development will be provided to the Workforce Development Network (WDN) based upon service provider interviews and research on national models in workforce development. This documentation will be provided in three forms: as a database; as a resource directory; and as an analysis of the gaps in the current system.

The New Urbanist, or Neotraditional, movement that has characterized urban planning since the beginning of the 1990s has a vision of how people should live, work, and travel in a manner that, planners believe, will be "best" for society and for the environment. At the core of this vision is the notion that a return to the high densities, architectural form, and lifestyle of the period prior to World War II will result in a better society. A question that is ignored by the neotraditional proposals is the extent to which changing technologies might make calls for higher densities obsolete. …
