Trends Of U.S. Agricultural Cooperatives (1913-2016), Iryna Demko

This report identifies and describes national trends in the progression of agricultural cooperatives since 1913 with an emphasis on 2000s. As the number of agricultural cooperatives in the U.S. has declined, their size, represented by business volume and the number of members, increased. Based on 1976-2016 data, cooperatives’ total assets and equity have been increasing and were projected to grow in 2017. On average, 2% of cooperatives in the U.S. merged or were acquired . Average incidence rates of mergers and acquisitions during 2000-2012 (33 incidences) were lower than during 1980-1999 (83 incidences). Over time, the number of grain cooperatives …

This report analyzes the potential economic impact of La Villa Hispana’s construction and operation proposed in the Clark‐Fulton neighborhood of Cleveland, the home to the densest population of Hispanic residents in the State of Ohio. We separately estimate the economic impact of El Mercado, one of the foundational projects of the La Villa Hispana development. The economic impacts are assessed on the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, and the State of Ohio.

The Greater University Circle Economic Inclusion (GUCI) Initiative has surpassed a decade of existence by connecting neighborhoods, businesses, and leaders throughout seven neighborhoods that encompass Greater University Circle (GUC) in Cleveland, Ohio. This initiative was first assembled by the Cleveland Foundation in 2005 to bring together the three major anchor institutions located in these neighborhoods (Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic, and University Hospitals Health System) to convene and meet shared goals by harnessing their collective economic power. Economic impact is an analytical approach used to estimate the benefits generated by an entity for an affected region. This study uses an input-output (I-O) model to estimate the effect of NASA Glenn Research Center’s spending on the economies of Northeast Ohio (NEO) and Ohio. This analytical tool measures economic impact in terms of growth in output (sales), value added (output less intermediary goods), number of new and supported jobs, labor income, and tax revenues. The 2018 report on the economic impact of companies funded and/or assisted by the Northeast Ohio Entrepreneurial Services Provider Program (ESP) shows findings and evidence of the growth of the supported firms over time. These companies not only have a significant workforce and expenditures, they also have a total of 2,313 issued patents and 6,777 patents pending. In 2017 alone, there were 891 issued patents and 920 patents pending.

BorderLight International Theater Festival is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established to launch a summer festival of contemporary international theater in Cleveland beginning in July 2019. Co-directors Dale Heinen and Jeffrey Pence have spearheaded BorderLight’s inception and programming. BorderLight is conceptualized in its debut form as a four-day international theater festival located in Cleveland, Ohio.1 It will include curated performances by international, national, and local artists—as well as an independent fringe festival—and will focus on engagement with underserved audiences and communities.2 This makes BorderLight a bifurcated theater festival, which is a combination of a curated and uncurated festival whereby some content is …

This report presents an analysis of the local economic impact of the MetroHealth System’s campus transformation. The MetroHealth System (“MHS”) Board of Trustees endorsed a campus transformation plan for an $855 million capital project, which includes cost projections for various aspects of the project, including design, construction, and equipment. The transformation plan covers a period of nine years spanning 2015 to 2023. The project involves several new buildings, including a 12-story hospital, a large parking garage, and a central utility plant. The transformation also calls for demolishing outdated buildings to increase the hospital campus’ greenspace and improve its network of …

First, there is a significant amount of taxpayer investment in play through public financing of small businesses and early stage companies. To date, much of the work evaluating economic development opportunity resulting from shale has focused primarily on the upstream (exploration and production) side of the oil gas business. However, it has been apparent for some time that regional industries that transmit, process and consume natural gas would benefit greatly from a local source of cheap and abundant natural gas. Moreover, it has also become apparent that certain locations within the Marcellus and Utica shale formations produce gas rich in natural gas liquids (“NGLs”). This report and the accompanying Eastern Ohio Shale and Housing Dashboard (http://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/urban_facpub/1383/) were prepared by a team of researchers from Cleveland State University’s Levin College of Urban Affairs (CSU) for the Ohio Housing Finance Agency (OHFA) to monitor the impact of the Utica shale development industry on housing affordability and availability in eight counties of eastern Ohio. The eight counties (Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Guernsey, Harrison, Jefferson, Monroe, and Noble) are home to the largest concentrations of shale activity in the state.

Since their initial development in the late 1990s, expert web portals have been an evolving tool for universities, systems of higher education, and economic development organizations. The web portals are searchable, web-based databases of university scholars and researchers that feature, at a minimum, information on their expertise, innovation products and publications. Many of the portals are growing to include information on universities’ physical assets and equipment, regional strengths, and additional services such as networking and analytical tools for research.
