The city of Burlington is facing a waning issue to stimulate economic growth in neighborhoods in its eastern portion. The Rejuvenate: North Church Street Corridor Plan strives to use equitable development and smart growth strategies to uplift the economic prosperity of the North Church Street corridor. This plan recommends improving pedestrian infrastructure, fostering sustainable development growth patterns, beautifying streetscapes, and increasing social and civic capital. The recommendations proposed collectively work towards re-imagining the American suburban landscape into walkable mixed-use communities.

The Reconstructing Randolph Project, Latoya Gray-Sparks

The Reconstructing Randolph Project is an in-depth historical case study of one of the last thriving and intact Black neighborhoods in Richmond to be disrupted by urban renewal. The case study utilizes a Black geographical lens, historic preservation practices and counter cartography to illuminate the rich history and people who made up the Randolph neighborhood. The plan also outlines policies and strategies that can be implemented to 1) amplify and preserve the history of Randolph and (2) protect long-term Black residents who wish to remain in a city that is quickly changing due to gentrification.

The City of Richmond is beginning the process of creating a composting program for the first time in the city’s history. It is part of a cross-departmental collaborative plan to divert food waste from the landfill and into a new composting program. The Office of sustainability is in the process of drafting the RVAGreen 2050 Climate and Equity Master Plan for Richmond, which includes an ambitious zero-waste goal. In order to accomplish this future goal, the city must begin setting up the infrastructure to begin diverting waste from the landfill.

The recommendations are modeled after the Main Street America Community Transformation strategy and primarily focus on vacant property abatement and utilizing urban design tactics to create a walkable district.

This paper examines the joint effect of political party affiliation and the urban landscape, as measured by access to parks, on case rates during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. The 2016 and 2020 U.S. Presidential Election returns are used as a proxy for a county’s political party affiliation prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A county population’s spatial relationship to its parks encapsulates the green open space within an urban environment. While these policies have intended results, the realized benefits and damages are challenging to define because they are the result of individual choices and the unique characteristics of the city. As a result, policymakers need to consider a complex web of factors such as employment, taxation, housing, mobility, and environmental quality. Access To Credit And Social Capital: The Case Of Indonesia, Muhammad Syaiful, Bayu Kharisma

This paper analyzes the relationship between social capital and individuals’ access to credit in Indonesia. We used the data from the fifth wave of the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS5) and focused on the “flow” aspect of social capital, i.e., participation in various activities that can be regarded as an addition to the general “stock” of social capital. The results showed that two participation characteristics in social activities, namely “voluntary-type” and “economic-embedded” activities which affect creditmarket outcome. This collective case study research evaluated how the concentrated urban poverty revitalization model administered by Purpose Built Communities (PBC) works to mitigate or eliminate intergenerational poverty and create thriving neighborhoods. There are 5 elements to the PBC revitalization model: (a) mixed-income housing, (b) a cradle-to-college educational accountability system, (c) focus on community health, (d) a tightly defined geographic neighborhood, and (e) the assignment of a Community Quarterback (CQ). In response to interdependent challenges, city planners are increasingly adopting “green infrastructure” (GI). Reviewing 122 plans from 20 US cities, we identify what types of city plans address and define GI, including the concepts associated with GI, as well as the types, functions, and benefits of GI. The most common plans that feature GI, some of which focus exclusively on GI, comply with US Clean Water Act regulations for stormwater and sewer systems. Municipalities also address GI through diverse planning processes, including the creation of comprehensive citywide plans. Many of these plans (~40%) do not explicitly define GI. When they …

Abstract Many male African American ex-offenders lack resources that would allow them to become successful in reentering society. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of male African American ex-offenders regarding homelessness and the search for housing after release from incarceration. Schneider and Ingram’s theory of social construction of target populations was the framework for the investigation. Data were collected by conducting semistructured interviews with 12 adult African American male ex-offenders from the South Florida region of the United States who were experiencing homelessness. This study examines procurement practices and policies that hinder or facilitate public research and development. An online survey and interviews with key informants in 44 research development institutions (RDIs) in the Philippines were conducted. Participants include Project Leaders, members of the Bids and Awards Committee (BAC), the BAC secretariat, chief accountants, technical working groups, and suppliers. The results show that some procurement policies, workflows, and capacities of the procuring entities contribute to procurement delays. A lack of qualified or suitable suppliers and a limited market of highly specialized and scientific equipment are also factors affecting procurement efficiency. It is recommended …
