This is the last lesson where students go outside to collect bird biodiversity data for their field study. In this lesson, students are asked to consider the fragmentation of their study site and the migration patterns of the birds in their site. Again, the goal is to connect to the in-class activities and encourage students to apply the science concepts covered in the classroom to their field study.

Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
This lesson is the culminating field site-based lesson in which students analyze the data they have been collecting over the last couple of weeks. Students apply the various scientific concepts they have been learning about biodiversity to make sense of their own data. After analyzing their own data in groups, students present their findings to the entire class. As part of these presentations, the class will discuss the validity of the different groups’ claims and whether they are supported by the data collected from the field as well as the various science concepts they have been learning in class.

The purpose of this lesson is to explore the evolution of human culture and its relation to health. Because overall population health is difficult to measure, statistics of life expectancy will be presented. Factors that influence life expectancy such as access to resources and technology as well as culture will be discussed. Students will also compare the weekly food consumption of different countries to explore how culture may play a role in health. Finally students will participate in an activity that has them reflect on their own choices and the possible influence of culture on those choices.

The purpose of this lesson is to explore how water quality affects human health. The importance of this issue has led to the separation of drinking water from wastewater in most developed countries. When potable water is not separated from other types of water, the risk of disease and infection from microorganisms and toxic chemicals increases. Students will learn about common contaminants found in untreated water and explore ways that the water can be made potable. Students will participate in an activity to create a water filter prototype and test its effectiveness.

The purpose of this investigation is to have students understand the causes and impact of air pollution especially as it relates to ground level ozone and air particles as well as the role of cities in producing air pollution. Students will read a brochure about ground level ozone created by the Environmental Protection Agency. In this activity, you are playing the role of a Public Health Investigator (PHI) assigned to a case. In your city, there has been a recent outbreak of sickness that is affecting dozens of people. The doctors report that the illness is caused by a bacterial infection. All of these people have reported a similar illness over the past 24 hours. They have reported nausea, diarrhea, fever and chills. However, the infection is generally not transferable from person-to-person. Therefore, people who are sickened by the bacteria must be acquiring the infection from a source.
