Next year (2016) marks the 30th anniversary of the Neighborhood Development Foundation in New Orleans. To celebrate thirty years of outreach with the community, NDF seeks to highlight many of the homeowners in the community affected by NDF over the years and their homebuyer education courses. The research represented in the 30 year report will be focused in (1) what NDF has accomplished over the past three decades, and, (2) most significantly, who they have affected. Uno’S Planning And Urban Studies Department Completes Mapping And Analysis Of Tremé, Michelle M. Thompson

Ninety-seven percent of the buildings in the historic Tremé neighborhood are rated either good or fair, according to a comprehensive mapping and analysis project completed by the University of New Orleans Department of Planning and Urban Studies. Out of 670 total buildings rated in the survey, 525 were deemed to be in good condition, while 124 were rated fair and 21 (3 percent) were rated poor. The property condition survey was conducted in the spring of 2013 for the Historic Faubourg Tremé Association by WhoData in coordination with Project Homecoming. The NORA Pilot Reinvestment Project (NPRP) was completed in May 2012 as the final project for the MURP 6051 Housing and Community Development course in the University of New Orleans (UNO) Department of Planning & Urban Studies (UNO-PLUS). Planners have a unique ability to consume information and address both policy and practical issues on a variety of scales – from neighborhood to regional to international. The use of information technology, specifically geographic information systems, continues to expand the planners’ toolkit. Applying these tools requires planners to go beyond synchronous inductive and deductive reasoning and move towards ‘integrated thinking’. Spatial literacy allows citizen planners to question and advocate for public policies based upon community data that has not been readily available to decision makers in municipal government. Technology plays a vital role in public and private businesses, governments, and organizations, and can be especially useful to organizations that may know the least about it. Unfortunately, many Community Based Organizations (CBOs) have traditionally been unable to embrace contemporary tools due to lack of capacity, time or money. This paper begins to identify issues related to the technology gap faced by CBOs in a case study that examines community economic empowerment for the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative® (DSNI).
