Module 01: Introduction to Urban Ecology
Students will be provided with a framework for thinking about and planning for directed action based on the science of urban ecology. They will examine and discuss a case study that follows this framework, and will also have the opportunity to apply the framework in an example project, that of making the case for paper recycling in a fictional high school. This framework is a consistent feature of the curriculum, and is a part of every module. The purpose of this activity is to encourage students to develop a sense of duty and possibility that garbage and hazardous wastes can be successfully addressed, even if at a local scale. The main purpose of this lesson is to introduce the concept of climate change and to reexamine the earth as an energy system. The lesson begins by students watching short video clips with different perspectives on global climate change. The class then discusses whether or not they believe the climate is changing and what would count as evidence of climate change. Finally, the class analyzes temperature data from the past 120 years and then the past 1000 years that illustrates how the climate has become warmer over time. Module 03: Energy & Climate Change
This lesson presents students with a review of the greenhouse effect and the overall energy gains by the earth due to the enhancement of this process. To illustrate the ideas presented, the class will do an investigation logging the temperatures inside and outside of an aquarium, with and without vegetation. The molecular level interactions between light energy and gases will then be presented with a PowerPoint in order for students to better understand the proposed mechanism for the greenhouse effect.

This lesson explores the connection between global warming, climate change and weather, with a special examination of the influence of climate change on the changing energetics of storms. The big idea is that global climate change is having a significant impact on a planetary scale and the most visible impact of that is on ocean temperatures. The lesson begins with brainstorming possible effects of global warming and allows students to analyze real weather data. There is special attention paid to how these climate and weather changes may affect students’ own neighborhoods.

Students will review the carbon cycle focusing on its qualities as a system. The lesson begins with a class discussion in order to illicit students’ prior ideas about the carbon cycle in terms of where it comes from and where it goes in the earth’s system. The purpose of this lesson is for students to consider where they currently obtain their energy from and their subsequent impact on the carbon cycle. The goal is to help students understand that humans extract energy from a variety of sources including carbon based resources (e.g. wood, coal and petroleum). Many of the activities and decisions that humans make everyday impact the amount of greenhouses gases (particularly carbon dioxide) that they produce.
