A Comparative Study Of The Organizational Culture Of A South Korean And Us High School Athletic Department., Youngjik Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In South Korea, many high school athletics practitioners are interested in adapting US high school athletics policies to South Korean high school athletics. However, due to the cultural differences in the overall systems and environments of high school athletics in each country, directly applying US high school athletic policies does not always fit in South Korea. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the perceptions of principals and athletic directors of the organizational cultures of a high school athletic department in South Korea and in the USA. Also, this study examined the effect of the organizational culture …

Accelerometry And Global Navigation Satellite Systems Derived Training Loads, Abdulmalek Bursais
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this dissertation include 1) to review accelerometry and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) derived measures used to monitor training load, 2) to investigate the validity and reliability of accelerometers (ACCs) to identify stepping events and quantify training load, 3) to assess the relationship between accelerometry and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) derived measures in quantifying training load. In Study I, acceleration data was collected via two tri-axial ACC (Device A and Device B) sampling at 100Hz mounted closely together at the xiphoid process level. Each participant (n=30) performed two trials of straight-line walking, running, and …

"I Didn't Know How All This Works": A Case Study Examining The Transition Experiences Of Student-Athletes From High School To A Mid-Major Di Program, Mitchell T. Woltring, Caitlyn Hauff, Brooke Forester, Shelley L. Holden
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
The transition period from high school to college includes a myriad of issues specific to student-athletes (Bernhard & Bell, 2015; Bjornsen & Dinkel, 2017; Comeaux, 2015). The present study sought to illuminate the specific transition issues faced by mid-major, DI student-athletes by providing them the platform to describe them in their own words, and provide their own recommendations for improvement. Utilizing a semi-structured interview guide which addressed transition issues, the qualitative study included 23 student-athletes in focus group settings. Analysis of interview data led to the emergence of two themes, with accompanying subthemes: 1) Encounters with academic support, with subthemes …
Developmental Outcomes Of University Female Basketball Athletes As Participants In Peer Mentoring Groups, Jonathan Kroll, Kathleen Mcmillian-Roberts
Developmental Outcomes Of University Female Basketball Athletes As Participants In Peer Mentoring Groups, Jonathan Kroll, Kathleen Mcmillian-Roberts
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Peer group mentoring can stimulate developmental outcomes for university basketball athletes. Seven female university basketball athletes from an NCAA Division III team participated in peer mentoring groups over the course of an academic year. By sharing about their lived experiences, the researchers were able to capture narratives that illuminated the impact of this developmental relationship. Thematic analysis was utilized to explore these descriptions and collate them into findings relevant for athletes, coaches, Athletics administrators, and others. Findings presented below indicate that these peer group mentoring experiences (a) nurtured synergistic relationships; (b) cultivated athletes’ resilience; and (c) developed athletes’ self-efficacy

Enhancing Financial Literacy Among College Athletes, Lisa M. Rubin, Mindy Joseph, Sonya Lutter, Daron K. Roberts, Julian J. Jones
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
College students, including athletes, have limited exposure to financial education prior to enrolling in college (Britt et al., 2015). Athletes juggling two full-time roles as athlete and college student have limited time for financial education and the opportunity to work. Some athletes receive athletic scholarships and some do not, but either way, many athletes must seek additional funding and student loans to pay for college. Huston’s (2010) model demonstrated connections between financial literacy, behaviors, and education to serve as a framework for our study. The purpose of this study was to determine college athletes’ subjective and objective financial literacy, how …

Analyzing Intramural Sport Participation At The State University Of New York College At Cortland 2021, Stephen D'Alessandro
Master's Theses
SUNY Cortland has historically had a robust and active Intramural Sports program. The program saw 2,380 students participate during the Spring 2016 semester, but that number has steadily declined in recent years. In the Fall 2019 semester, the participation rate had fallen to 1,482 participants. Research has been conducted on the topic, although it is not applicable to SUNY Cortland. Past research on intramural participation has focused on constraints to participation, finding a lack of time a primary constraint However, the research is 15 years old and conducted at universities with vastly different demographics than SUNY Cortland. Running Bodies And The Affective Spaces Of Health In And Beyond Marathon Running In China, Xiaomei Cai, Orlando Woods, Quan Gao
Running Bodies And The Affective Spaces Of Health In And Beyond Marathon Running In China, Xiaomei Cai, Orlando Woods, Quan Gao
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This paper explores the affective formation of health and space/place through an examination of the affective, bodily and digital practices of marathon runners in China. By elaborating on the idea of “affective spaces of health”, we investigate not only the affective potential of running bodies that enables a therapeutic and individualised form of selfhood in response to the post-socialist transformation but also the affective atmospheres that condition and discipline runners’ affective capacities of health. The paper therefore questions the simplistic association of health with particular qualities of place and calls for studying the affective and fluid spaces of health.
