Over the past several weeks a number of small stories have been floating in my head. The most instructive involved cheerleading which some people are now claiming is a sport. If sport is defined as anything done in competition, something that colleges give scholarships for, and something that leads to cheating, then cheerleading qualifies.

On Tuesday I was listening to the "Jim Rome Show" while driving into the campus and I heard a painful and astounding interview with Sheldon Kennedy. As some of you will remember Kennedy was the NHL player for the Boston Bruins who revealed in late 1996 that as a young boy and then young man he was subject to repeated sexual abuse by his hockey coach Graham James.

Lynn University is a successful university in many phases. One area that Lynn excels in is athletics. The athletic department as a whole has won several national championships. Many programs are highly ranked nationally year after year. Within this success there is one aspect of college athletics that Lynn University does not have. There are no summer high school sports camps. Many other colleges utilize summer camps to aid their sports programs and universities as a whole.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that persons with disabilities be integrated to the maximum extent possible, and that these persons cannot be excluded from participation. Intramural directors need to be proactive in this area. The benefits of intramural sports are vast, and they help many students become part of the college community.

The Impact Of Social Stereotypes As They Relate To Training Practices Of Female Athletes Competing In High-Risk Sports, Lisa Ciaravella

This study was conducted to investigate if a lack of conditioning and the increased rate of injury among female athletes are due primarily to social stereotypes associated with women's athletics. Ten professional female basketball players and ten high school basketball player were surveyed to determine how strength training is conceptualized and what role strength training had played in injury prevention. The study revealed that the increased rate of injury among female athletes are due to time constraints and/or lack of emphasis on strength and conditioning imposed on the athletes themselves for reasons of not strength training as opposed to social …

Caught In Eurosport World - What I Saw And What I Missed, Richard C. Crepeau

I have been away for the last two weeks, off into the land of EuroSport where real men play real sports in which feet figure heavily. As a result I have missed much of the action of the first two weeks of the baseball season, except for an occasional glimpse at a Mets or Yankee highlight, which seem to be the only baseball fragments shown on CNN World News.

The purpose of this study was to examine the economic impact of the Richmond XTERRA off-road triathlon event on the Greater Richmond Area. The Greater Richmond Area, according to the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, consists of the City of Richmond, Chesterfield County, Hanover County and Henrico County. It was estimated that the XTERRA off-road triathlon would have a significant economic impact on the Greater Richmond Area. A survey instrument was distributed and collected, by the researcher and his assistants, during the registration time on Saturday, June 23, 2001. A total of229 out of350 triathlon participants responded for a 65.4% …
