Biomechanical Analysis Of The Volleyball Overhand Floater Serve, Jian Lu

The purpose of this study was to investigate biomechanical factors associated with successful overhand floater serves. Specifically, the study investigated the kinematics of the server at ball-hand contact. Six subjects performed floater serves for this investigation. Subjects served three trials under each of the following conditions: (a) short and long serves and (b) three ball-valve positions at ball-hand contact. Threedimensional cinematographic methods were used to obtain the data. Descriptive statistics were utilized to compare floater and nonfloater serves with respect to distance and ball-valve position. An Interactionist Perspective On Centrality And Racial Discrimination In Professional Baseball, David S. Czurak

The structuralist version of centrality has measured racial discrimination in professional baseball for the past two decades. Its reliance on positional groupings, based on location, has resulted in a count of racial occupancy at these locations, often without a comparative racial baseline. The structuralist premise has accused baseball of playing field discrimination, citing it as a black versus white issue while discounting other motivations. From a symbolic interactionist perspective, this structuralist account of centrality is flawed in that it lacked action. Baseball's All-Star Game is coming up on Tuesday in Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium, one of the old style cookie-cutter ballparks of the early 60's. Although the concept of an All-Star game dates back to 1858 and a game between all-star teams from Brooklyn and New York, it was sixty-one years ago that the first modern all-star game was held, July 6, 1933.

Kinematic Analysis Of Sprinting With And Without The Speed Chute, Douglas Roy West

The problem under investigation was to determine if kinematic differences existed when sprinting with and without the speed chute. Eight Western Michigan University Track and Field Athletes were filmed at 100 frames per second as they sprinted two trials with and without the speed chute.

Three ANOVAs and descriptive statistics were used to evaluate the effects of sprinting with and without the speed chute. Descriptive statistics provided information for numerous dependent variables. Although statistically significant differences (R < .05) existed between sprinting with and without the speed chute, those differences may not be practical for the coach to use in terms of evaluation of sprinting technique, because the differences would be difficult for the human eye to see. Therefore, the speed chute may be a viable training tool as kinematics were only minimally affected.

It was not the swimsuit issue, but Florida State University must have felt nearly naked as the story of players taking payoffs from agents became public.

The biggest story in the world of sport this past week was not the abrupt and quick end of the Orlando Magic season, although clearly in Central Florida it was and continues to be the biggest topic of conversation among sports fans. Is there a sinister force stalking Orlando? Are the taxpayers of the city about to be relieved of some of their excess cash? Are the citizens of Orlando ready to turn over $30M to $40M to Al Davis along with a piece of real estate, and another $4M to the DeVos clan? These indeed are worthy charities, and the people of Orlando through their representatives should support these charitable enterprises. Orlando has long been noted for its support of public welfare for the worthy, the oppressed and the downtroden.

This past week Wayne Gretzky became the career scoring leader in the National Hockey League. For fifteen seasons now The Great One has been the dominant figure in hockey and in sport. But to call him The Great One is to grossly understate his significance. Wayne Gretzky holds sixty NHL records and now has added one more to the list, as he has broken Gordie Howe's record in over 600 less games, and eleven fewer seasons than Howe.

It was a week to remember in Dallas. Even by Texas standards this story was as big and slimy as they come. Jimmy Johnson was gone, Barry Switzer had arrived, and Jerry Jones had just swapped the two biggest egos in football coaching for one another. Proving in the process that he has the biggest ego of all. Not to mention the most power.

Investigation Of Past Performance And Sources Of Motivation On Team And Self-Efficacy Of Collegiate Soccer Players, Kevin P. Demers

This study investigated the relationship between past performance and sources of motivation on team and self-efficacy of collegiate soccer players. The subjects of this study were 92 male collegiate soccer players who participated in MIAA competition in the fall of 1992. Data were collected from team and self-efficacy questionnaires modified for this study. A sport motivation scale from Butt's (1987) Sport Protocol was also used to collect data. The findings of this study indicated that (a) past performance is the primary variable in predicting team efficacy; (b) the coach's rating of player ability was a stronger source of self-efficacy than …

In a week when those looking for signs of the end of the world saw Jimmy Johnson leave Dallas and the Gators make the final four, major league baseball also presents a new face. The 1994 season opens with three divisions in each league, producing three divisional champions, plus one wild card team, and an extra tier of playoffs. The compelling force in this change is television, which can only make money on playoffs and the World Series and loses money during the regular season.
