Last Saturday you could hear the chant that goes with the tomahawk chop on two networks, and if you were quick with the remote control you could even get them into sequence. The Atlanta Braves were on CBS, while over on ABC the Florida State Seminoles were putting on a clinic for Kansas to open the college football season. As always, Keith Jackson was there with his now familiar, nearly anesthetizing, call of the game. College football and Keith Jackson are nearly one.

Determinants Of Elite Athletes' Commitment To Sport: Examination Of The Sport Commitment Model In The Professional Sport Domain, Tammy Kay Hall

Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the applicability of the Sport Commitment Model for a group of elite, professional athletes. The model proposes that an athlete's commitment will increase as sport enjoyment, personal investments, social constraints, and involvement opportunities increase and will decrease with an increase in involvement opportunities. The influence of identification as an athlete, a determinant of commitment not included in the original model, was also examined. One hundred and eighty three professional football players from the Canadian Football League (CFL) (n = 121) and National Football League (NFL) (n = 69) participated in the study. The President of Florida State University, Dr. Dale Lick resigned last week after controversy surrounding his candidacy for the presidency of Michigan State University. That controversy stemmed from comments he had once made concerning the Black Athlete, in which he said that Black athletes were naturally superior to whites, as they were able to jump higher than whites, citing the evidence of basketball performance to demonstrate his point.

The interest of the media was not directed at the president of the university, or the unveiling of some new piece of technology or super computer, but rather it was media day for Big Orange football. For those not intimately involved with college athletics this is the hot topic currently rattling across campuses nationwide. Football coaches quake at the prospect of reduced scholarships and budgets, and curse the "extremists" from the women's movement who are threatening their opulent empires.

The Acute Effect Of Aerobic Exercise On Anxiety Levels, Toni Devolder

The present study sought to determine whether or not state anxiety levels were significantly reduced when individuals participated in aerobic dance workouts of 15 minutes and 30 minutes. Undergraduate university students and faculty enrolled in an aerobic dance class were volunteers in this study. As hypothesized, subjects in the aerobic dance classes did reduce anxiety acutely following both their 15 minute and 30 minute workout as assessed by the STAI (Y-Form State Anxiety). Thus, results indicate that state anxiety may be reduced through aerobic dance with similar situations and individuals. In addition, the study also looked at the posttest state …

Compassionate Capitalism. Nice phrase isn't it. It is a phrase used in a recent book title: Compassionate Capitalism: Helping Others Help Themselves. It is also used in the name of a new Foundation: the Compassionate Capitalism Foundation, a nonprofit group based in Muskegon, Michigan. The book and the foundation are the creations of Rich DeVos, he's the boss, of the Orlando Magic.

Just over a week ago Dick Schultz resigned as the Executive Director of the NCAA, a position he has held since 1987. Schultz has been called a leader in the reform of Intercollegiate Athletics and has changed the public image of the NCAA. His resignation was prompted by the fact that the NCAA had found rules violations in the University of Virginia athletic program during the Dick Schultz years as Athletic Director there. Virginia has been placed on two years probation.

Normally the Catholic Church requires a certain passage of time, as well as evidence of the performance of three miracles, before anyone is presented for canonization to sainthood. Apparently ESPN's standards are not quite that high, as the network canonized Jim Valvano last week following his death. Although Valvano had at least one miracle to his credit, the winning of the 1983 NCAA basketball championship with the miracle shot against Houston as time ran out, it still seems unlikely that he is the stuff out of which saints are made.

The problem statement for this study was: "Will there be a significant difference between the mean verbal format and mean visual format CEWAS scores of fifth and sixth grade students'"

There would seem a need for this study due to the increasing number of participants in outdoor recreational activities. This increase introduces many environmental concerns which must be addressed in order to maintain present conditions at wilderness areas.

Over a year and one-half ago a classic American drama unfolded in Channelview, Texas, where Wanda Holloway, 37, was tried for attempted murder. The charge was that Wanda tried to hire a hit man to kill Verna Heath whose daughter Amber was pushing Shanna Holloway, Wanda's little girl, to defeat in the school cheerleading competition. This was a story that touched the hearts of all Americans.

To those who know their history this is not a surprise. This sort of jeremiad has marked nearly every decade in baseball history.
