Barring an eleventh hour settlement, today will mark the beginning of the fifth strike and eighth work stoppage in major league baseball over the past quarter century. At stake in this struggle is whether or not after twenty years the owners will be able to reverse the power flow into the hands of the players. The rise of the Major League Baseball Players Association under the skillful leadership of Marvin Miller, coupled with some astoundingly inept moves by ownership precipitated a power shift in baseball from management to labor.

A few weeks ago Addis and The Sporting News sponsored a symposium in New York City on the issue of job opportunity for minorities in management level positions in sport. One of the participants in the discussion was Bill Rhoden, columnist for The New York Times and The Sporting News. That symposium and several of Bill Rhoden's columns over the past few weeks have reminded me of a number of issues which have been raised in the past few years, but have not been adequately addressed in most professional and intercollegiate sports establishments.

Having been born and raised in Minnesota and now having lived nearly thirty years in Florida, I have spent most of my life on this planet in two of the fishingest states in the Union. Florida has almost as many bass fishermen as it does ways of taking money from tourists. Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, although in reality there are over 100,000 lakes in my home state.

It has been the year to remember the achievements of Jackie Robinson both in and outside of baseball. Robinson's breaking of the color line had a social significance which transcended the game of baseball. At the season opener at Shea Stadium the President of the United States recognized Jackie Robinson, and the Acting Commissioner of Baseball retired Jackie's number for all of major league baseball. Radio and TV programs have examined the events of 1947, social commentators have recalled Robinson's contributions to American life, and baseball historians have paid their tributes to this remarkable man.

Looking back to the first radio commentary I did six years ago, the subject was the U.S. Open Tennis Championships where the stellar performance that year by Jimmy Connors, especially in his late night match against Patrick McEnroe, was such a contrast with the sorry performance by the over hyped Andre Agassi. Connors has since moved on to the seniors tour while Agassi's career remains largely the story of the failure to live up to the hype and the potential.

Nellie Fox, Phil Niekro, and Willie Wells will also be honored. The fourteenth manager and the fifteenth Dodger honored, this man, who has been considered one of baseball's great ambassadors over the past twenty years, is an overwhelming fan's choice for a spot at Cooperstown.

About two weeks ago The Orlando Sentinel ran an interesting story about a young man named Jason Williams who, according to all reports, could become the best point guard in the history of the basketball program at the University of Florida. There is only one small problem: "I hate school. I hate it so much I can't stand it," says Williams. Certainly this is a view that is shared by many young men and women, some of whom for a multitude of reasons end up in classrooms at universities around the country.

Twenty-five years ago Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 mandated that women not be discriminated against in any educational institution receiving federal funds. Although Title IX does not mention sport specifically it is clear that sport is one of those activities covered.
