It was Tuesday of last week when a colleague stopped me to say that he was distressed that he couldn't find any Earnhardt coverage in the media here in Orlando. Preoccupied with other matters I was a bit slow on the uptake, but then realized that he was joking.

In the History of Orlando in the period AD(After Disney) there have been two public projects that have been done exceptionally well. The first is the Crown Jewel of the region, Orlando International Airport. The second is the OArena, which now carries the corporate name, TGIF Waterbug Centre, or some such thing.

In a world in which the Disney Corporation makes a calculated decision not to honor Super Bowl MVP Ray Lewis with a trip to Disney World only to have Mark Chumura announce that he is going to Disney World to celebrate his escape of prison time for his hot tub romp with high school girls on prom night, one is left to ponder what the XFL will need to do to reach a public satiated with sleaze.

The comeback of Mario Lemieux with the Pittsburgh Penguins has converged very nicely with that of Jennifer Capriati. In the past week Capriati completed her long climb back to the top of women's tennis, and in the middle of his latest comeback Lemieux was voted NHL player of the month for January.

Is there anyone alive in the United States today who does not know that the Super Bowl is coming up on Sunday? It is Super Bowl XXXV, thirty-five in real numbers, and will be played in Tampa. On Sport and Society

The death of Marty Glickman last week brought back a number of memories. In and around the New York area people recalled Glickman as voice of the Knicks and any number of other teams on New York radio sports. Across the nation, and indeed perhaps even across the world, Glickman's death brought back memories of the 1936 Olympic Games and the horror of Hitler's final solution. The latter was without a doubt more significant as it affected sport as well as the course of world history.

Black Or White: A Content Analysis Of Newspaper Coverage Dealing With Nba Players & Race, Daniel Eric Newman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A content analysis of The New York Times and The Washington Post was conducted to determine if there were differences in the coverage devoted to African-American and Caucasian players in the National Basketball Association from July 1, 1999, through June 30, 2000.

The study examined 96 randomly chosen articles, 48 from each publication, to determine trends with regard to coverage of each race.

While the hypotheses predicted African-American players would receive more negative coverage than their Caucasian counterparts, the results showed that Caucasian players actually receive slightly more negative coverage.

Over the past several days much has been written about the graduation of Shaquille O'Neal from Louisiana State University. Indeed the event has been the butt of many jokes, one of which Shaq generated himself when he told people he was working on his degree at Learn Slow University. He now says that LSU means Love Shaq University.
