Michael Eisner, the latest gentleman sportsman of our time, announced this week that the new Disney entry in the National Hockey League would be named after a film, and be called "The Mighty Ducks" of Anaheim. They will play in a facility called The Pond. And so with one sweep of his sleazy pen Eisner has degraded hockey and infringed on a fifty-year-old baseball cliche. "Ducks on the Pond" will never again sound the same.

This past weekend in one of those nameless faceless tennis tournaments that no one pays much attention to, Martina Navratilova made tennis history by becoming the oldest player to ever defeat a number one ranked player. At age 36 years, 3 months and 29 days, Martina beat the 19 year old Monica Seles in three sets, winning a third set tie breaker. This match ended Seles' winning streak at 34 matches.

A week ago the National Football League and the NFL Players Association reached an agreement on a new seven year contract, marking the end of a labor dispute that goes back to the twenty four day strike of 1987. The settlement was reached three weeks after an apparent agreement had broken down, and four months after a federal jury in Minneapolis had ruled Plan-B free agency to be in violation of anti-trust laws. Following that decision Judge David Doty urged both parties to arrive at a settlement of their dispute, telling them that he would impose a settlement if necessary.

Three weeks ago the National Hockey League announced at the their winter meetings in Anaheim that they were expanding again, this time adding teams in Miami and Disneyland, While the addition of the Wayne Huizenga's Blockbuster video money is an important coup for the league, it pales next to the addition of the Disney Company as a franchise owner.

Two weeks ago "Red" Barber died in Tallahassee. Since 1981 Barber has been a familiar voice on National Public Radio's Morning Edition. Each Friday morning at 7:35 "Red" sitting in his home in Tallahassee had a warm and interesting conversation with Bob Edwards, the Colonel. He would talk about the sports of the week, his recollections of sports past, and very often the state of his garden and the foliage of Tallahassee.

Most of Wednesday it looked as though it would be the year of the bridesmaids in the World Series. But not quite. Francisco Cabrerra and Jose Lind saw to that. Lind's error extended the ninth inning, and Cabrerra's single ended it. Facing certain defeat the Atlanta Braves scored three runs to win 3-2 and the Pirates remain bridesmaids for the third consecutive year. Earlier in the day Toronto got a major monkey off its back by eliminating the Oakland A's.

It is remembered as well because the Gipper was played by the somnambulant President of the United States who incessantly evoked its memory for whatever feeble cause he was pushing. Over the past three months an antitrust suit was before a jury of eight women in a Minneapolis Federal Court. Eight players brought suit against the National Football League claiming that the Plan B free agency system was illegal.The verdict rendered last week ruled Plan B too restrictive and awarded four of the players considerable damages, while leaving the NFL to pay the legal fees for both sides. These fees are in excess of $10M. Other matters of free agency arising from the decision are yet to be ruled upon by the judge.

Philip Lowry chose the title Green Cathedrals for his book on the baseball parks of America because of the religious devotion that baseball fans seem to bring to the sport, and the majesty of many of these parks, especially the older ones. Over the past summer my wife and I had the good fortune to visit three parks, representing three distinctly different eras in baseball history.
