Baseball Strike: The Issues And The Fans, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Is Beach Volleyball destined to become the Sport of the 90's? Have you seen enough of this thing? Watching National League pitchers strike-out was more exciting than this.

Grant Contract - New Coach? - Baseball Hof, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 1994

Grant Contract - New Coach? - Baseball Hof, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

For the Orlando Magic it looked like the biggest development since the signing of the Shaq. To be able to pick up Horace Grant as a free agent without giving up Dennis Scott on waivers, and only losing Scott Skiles and a first round pick in 1996 is truly amazing. John Gabriel, or whoever engineered this deal, seemed on the way to canonization, having performed a certifiable miracle.

Sports Are Different Here - An American In Europe During World Cup, Richard C. Crepeau Jul 1994

Sports Are Different Here - An American In Europe During World Cup, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It's odd when you leave the United States and go off for a vacation and have very little contact with the sports scene for over three weeks. Baseball, which is a daily obsession nearly disappears from your life, with only an occasional glimpse at scores in the international Herald Tribune or USA Today, and a few highlights hear and there on CNN.

O. J. Simpson - Hero Vs. Celebrity, Richard C. Crepeau Jun 1994

O. J. Simpson - Hero Vs. Celebrity, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It has been a wild and crazy several weeks of sport while WUCF has been off the air to increase power, and over the next few weeks I will try to catch up on some of the notable action. The Stanley Cup and NBA Finals have concluded, the World Cup has moved to center stage, the Baseball All-Star game is approaching and so apparently is a strike, Wimbledon is approaching its climax, stories of corruption continue to flow off the college campuses in Tallahassee and Miami, Evander Hollifield has been cured of heart problems by an Orlando faith-healer, and O.J. …

Nba Finals, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

There were times when I thought I was watching the World Wrestling Federation. All that was missing was a gold lamay cape worn by Patrick Ewing, cowboy boots and stetson for Charles Oakley, or designer trunks with matching shoes for John Starks. As for Pat Riley he has always looked the part.

Baseball's All-Star Game, Richard C. Crepeau Jun 1994

Baseball's All-Star Game, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Baseball's All-Star Game is coming up on Tuesday in Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium, one of the old style cookie-cutter ballparks of the early 60's. Although the concept of an All-Star game dates back to 1858 and a game between all-star teams from Brooklyn and New York, it was sixty-one years ago that the first modern all-star game was held, July 6, 1933.

Father's Day, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This week in honor of father's day I want to talk about the man who taught me a love of sport, and especially a love of baseball, and who taught me much about life.

College Athletes And Payoff's, Richard C. Crepeau May 1994

College Athletes And Payoff's, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

As the station went off the air to increase power one of the biggest stories in college sport was coming out of Tallahassee by way of Sports Illustrated. It was not the swimsuit issue, but Florida State University must have felt nearly naked as the story of players taking payoffs from agents became public.

Baseball And Michael Jordan, Richard C. Crepeau May 1994

Baseball And Michael Jordan, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Michael was in town this week, not to lead the Bulls in a playoff game against the Magic, but in pursuit of his new career. Batting second and playing right field for the Birmingham Barons number 45, Michael Jordan.

Formula One Driver Ayrton Senna, Richard C. Crepeau May 1994

Formula One Driver Ayrton Senna, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The biggest story in the world of sport this past week was not the abrupt and quick end of the Orlando Magic season, although clearly in Central Florida it was and continues to be the biggest topic of conversation among sports fans. It is a story clearly worth some comment and I will return to it at a later date.

Richard Nixon And Sports, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 1994

Richard Nixon And Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

In one of the most interesting and bizarre pieces of American literature featuring a president of the United States, Robert Coover in "Whatever Happened to Gloomy Gus of the Chicago Bears?" draws a picture of the late 37th President of the United States that has become a classic of presidential portraiture.

City Of Orlando The Magic Contract And Al Davis' Desires, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 1994

City Of Orlando The Magic Contract And Al Davis' Desires, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Is there a sinister force stalking Orlando? Are the taxpayers of the city about to be relieved of some of their excess cash? Are the citizens of Orlando ready to turn over $30M to $40M to Al Davis along with a piece of real estate, and another $4M to the DeVos clan? These indeed are worthy charities, and the people of Orlando through their representatives should support these charitable enterprises. Orlando has long been noted for its support of public welfare for the worthy, the oppressed and the downtroden.

Wayne Gretzky, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 1994

Wayne Gretzky, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This past week Wayne Gretzky became the career scoring leader in the National Hockey League. For fifteen seasons now The Great One has been the dominant figure in hockey and in sport. But to call him The Great One is to grossly understate his significance. Wayne Gretzky holds sixty NHL records and now has added one more to the list, as he has broken Gordie Howe's record in over 600 less games, and eleven fewer seasons than Howe.

Jimmy Johnson, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 1994

Jimmy Johnson, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was a week to remember in Dallas. Even by Texas standards this story was as big and slimy as they come. Jimmy Johnson was gone, Barry Switzer had arrived, and Jerry Jones had just swapped the two biggest egos in football coaching for one another. Proving in the process that he has the biggest ego of all. Not to mention the most power.

Baseball's New Landscape: Playoff Structure, Richard C. Crepeau Mar 1994

Baseball's New Landscape: Playoff Structure, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

In a week when those looking for signs of the end of the world saw Jimmy Johnson leave Dallas and the Gators make the final four, major league baseball also presents a new face. The 1994 season opens with three divisions in each league, producing three divisional champions, plus one wild card team, and an extra tier of playoffs. The compelling force in this change is television, which can only make money on playoffs and the World Series and loses money during the regular season.

Money And March Madness - Money And Bobby Knight, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The Big Dance. The Road to Charlotte. The Road to the Final Four. March Madness. All those colorful names created by the people at CBS, for what is in fact the Big Paycheck, the road to the bank, recruiting madness, and the road to the final corruption of college sport.
