The Two Michaels: Jordan And Tyson, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It may or may not be the best of times or the worst of times, but it is a Tale of Two Michaels. This week marks the return of the two Michaels, Jordan and Tyson, to the spotlight in sportsworld. The return of either one would be a major story, but the return of both in one week is a bonanza. The two Michaels also offer two very different stories of departure and return, and no doubt both evoke a wide range of emotions.

Was he the greatest ballplayer of all time? He thought so and told everyone who would and would not listen that he was. In the first voting for entrance into the Hall of Fame Ty Cobb out-polled all his rivals. Ernest Hemmingway thought so, calling him "the greatest of all ballplayers-and an absolute shit." In the film "Cobb" starring Tommy Lee Jones the later part of Hemmingway's assessment of the Georgia Peach is illustrated better than the former.

Have you Atlanta Braves fans noticed how well Krause is doing at shortstop? Did anyone see the box from the Mets-Yankees game last Sunday? What a line-up! They say that Newman may be the new DiMaggio, and that Jensen might be the new Seaver. And boy don't those San Francisco Giants look tough again this year with Ortman in center and Morrow in right? And of course the Blue Jays are still the defending World Champions, and they look like they are loaded with new talent. And even if they win it all, the World Championship will still come south …

Remembering Fred Perry And Nat Holman, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the past two weeks two major sports figures of the Twentieth Century have died. On February 2, Fred Perry died in Melbourne, Australia at age 85, and ten days later on February 12, Nat Holman died in the Bronx at age 98. Both men made major contributions to their sports.

It was just over a year ago that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman fired the first shot of the recently concluded hockey war. On January 12, 1994 Bettman notified the players that the owners opening proposal would have a salary structure with a limited amount of compensation. The players flatly rejected anything resembling a salary cap.

It is unusual that a documentary would be named as movie of the year. It is astounding when the subject of the film of the year is sport. Both have occurred and starting tonight you can see "Hoop Dreams" at the Enzian Theater in Maitland.
