I have been away for the last two weeks, off into the land of EuroSport where real men play real sports in which feet figure heavily. As a result I have missed much of the action of the first two weeks of the baseball season, except for an occasional glimpse at a Mets or Yankee highlight, which seem to be the only baseball fragments shown on CNN World News.

The purpose of this study was to examine the economic impact of the Richmond XTERRA off-road triathlon event on the Greater Richmond Area. The Greater Richmond Area, according to the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, consists of the City of Richmond, Chesterfield County, Hanover County and Henrico County. It was estimated that the XTERRA off-road triathlon would have a significant economic impact on the Greater Richmond Area. A survey instrument was distributed and collected, by the researcher and his assistants, during the registration time on Saturday, June 23, 2001. The first thing that you need to know coming from Florida is that it is called the Winter Olympics because it takes place in the winter. Therefore it is cold. At times it is bitterly cold, but most of the time it is just cold. As this was my first Olympics and the Winter Games are my favorite none of this mattered as we headed off for Olympic Park and the 90m ski jumping competition on Sunday.

Watching the Super Bowl on Sunday one could not avoid being moved by some aspect or another of the patriotism on display. 9/11 remains strong in the memory of us all and as I noted last September sport does provide us with opportunities for collective mourning, remembrance, and expressions of patriotism. I also noted that it is a characteristic of Americans to move toward excess in almost everything we do in public ritual.

It is Super Bowl XXXVI, thirty-six in real numbers, and will be played in what should be the permanent home of the Super Bowl, New Orleans. There is no venue more appropriate, save perhaps Vegas, for this mid-winter festival of conspicuous consumption and conspicuous waste, not be mention decadence, in these high holy days of the American Empire.

It was just a year ago that Jennifer Capriati completed her remarkable and inspiring comeback with a victory in the Australian Open. On Friday forty-four year old Thomas Junta was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Costin on July 5, 2000 in the Boston suburb of Reading. This piece of news is nothing extraordinary as similar items can be found in most daily newspapers across the country once or twice a year. What made this case of extraordinary interest across America, put it on Court TV, and attracted extensive coverage on the 24/7 news channels was the particular setting and circumstances of the case.

Nepotism is a dirty little word: Related individuals work together in entertainment, medicine, education and yes, even sports administration. This study proposes to identify the acceptance of relatives, by blood or by marriage, working together in NCAA Division II colleges in the southeastern United States. "Nepotism" is an arguably accurate descriptor of arrangements of relatives working together. However, the potential for real as well as asserted preferential treatment is shown to exist. This study explores the national initiative in the practise of sport for all from its inception in Malaysia until the year 2000. Background information of the sport scene in the country including the history of sport in the country and the importance of sport in the national agenda are discussed. The promulgation of the National Sports Policy in 1988 is evidence that the government secs sport playing an important part in Malaysian society. Three out of four of the policy objectives are related to sport for all. The methods of investigation in this study include documentary evidence and personal interviews. …
