Lost But Not Found: Southern Appalachia, Migration Patterns, And Culinary Tourism, Ashli Q. Stokes, Wendy Atkins-Sayre May 2024

Lost But Not Found: Southern Appalachia, Migration Patterns, And Culinary Tourism, Ashli Q. Stokes, Wendy Atkins-Sayre

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Despite growing acknowledgement of the variety of cultures that developed Southern Appalachia’s cuisine, some popular food writing continues to highlight the so-called insular nature of its food, drink, and culinary festivals. Regional tourists, especially those visiting its Blue Ridge or Smoky mountains, also remain likely to experience a delimited, often problematic Scots-Irish or white-European pioneer past, including when they eat and drink. Billboards advertise the outlaw Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Show, visitors choose from moonshine tastings in dilapidated looking but new distilleries, and diners enjoy gourmet biscuits alongside gravy “flights” at trendy restaurants in Asheville, North Carolina. Appalachian Studies and …

Between Memory And History: Irish Pubs As Sites Of Memory And Invention, Perry Share, Moonyoung Hong

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

The pub has been at the centre of Irish culture and identity for at least two centuries, has become a pillar of the Irish tourism “product,” and an export commodity as thousands of themed “Irish pubs” have been established across the world in the last number of decades, supplementing existing establishments that have served the global Irish community. This paper draws on key themes from the diverse material in our upcoming academic volume on the Irish pub, to be published by Cork University Press, later in 2024. The book brings together contributions from scholars of history, sociology, design, literature, culinary …

Literature has established that food is one of the primary motivators for travellers when making a decision as to which destination to travel to. Instagram Travel Influencers Coping With Covid-19 Travel Disruption, Andrei Kirilenko, Katarzyna Emin, Karen Tavares

ITSA 2022 Gran Canaria - 9th Biennial Conference: Corporate Entrepreneurship and Global Tourism Strategies After Covid 19

A significant portion of today’s marketing is done through social media influencers, that is, through bloggers with established online credibility in a certain area who are recognized and followed by a sizable online audience. In the travel and hospitality industry, the influencer marketing is primarily done through Instagram due to its emphasis on visual images rather than texts. Covid-19 related travel restrictions and shrinking social media advertisement in travel industry have heavily impacted travel influencers, reducing their income and forcing many out of business. We present the outcomes of a study of the top 150 online travel influencers. The analysis …

Post-Pilgrimage: Beyond Secularisation, Dane Munro, George Cassar Ph.D. Jun 2017

Post-Pilgrimage: Beyond Secularisation, Dane Munro, George Cassar Ph.D.

International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences

This paper proposes to introduce the term ‘post-pilgrimage’ as a key concept to the theory of pilgrimage applied to the Western Christian point of view. Tourism and pilgrimage have been joined to the hip since Palaeolithic times and have since then dynamically developed. And since we apparently live in a post-modern world, in which ‘post-tourism’ and ‘post-secularism’ are well-known models in the theoretical field of tourism research, the idea of ‘post-pilgrimage’ is perhaps overdue.

Creating And Storing A Toolkit For Pilgrimage And Religious Tourism Sites, Peter Wiltshier Jun 2017

Creating And Storing A Toolkit For Pilgrimage And Religious Tourism Sites, Peter Wiltshier

International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences

This paper reflects our abiding interest in our origins and of those religious and pilgrimage spaces that we attest to actively being part of our cultural inheritance. It explores options for, and barriers, to the creation of a repository of information to support practitioners and the clergy to maintain and develop these religious and pilgrimage sites. A model toolkit for storing collected knowledge is presented with illustrative examples from a range of sources. The examples used are largely drawn from a North/West perspective.

Volunteering In The Religious Heritage: Protection, Valorization And Mediation In Italy And France, Giovanna Rech Jun 2017

Volunteering In The Religious Heritage: Protection, Valorization And Mediation In Italy And France, Giovanna Rech

International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences

In Europe, voluntary work in cultural heritage is a debated but also crucial phenomenon which involves both young and retired people (VOCH 2008; Hustinx et al 2015). Volunteers carry out many activities related to caring and watching but also welcoming and guiding the attendance in these sites and institutions. In Italy, a large interest for the relation between religious heritage and tourism is not so recent but specific projects only dates back to the end of twentieth century even though this country owns one of the richest heritage in the world. In France, the Catholic church has launched a pastoral …
