The effectiveness of treatment programs used in juvenile drug courts within the United States is often questioned. The two research articles that will be discussed tested two different treatment programs in hopes that they would lead to more favorable outcomes than the programs currently in place.

Research into effective drug and alcohol treatment programs to be used within the juvenile justice system needs to be a priority. Juvenile Delinquency: An Investigation Of Risk Factors And Solutions., Lauren Cardoso

This article proposes that educational and community based programs can help juveniles stay away from crime and prevent recidivism. A presentation of federal and state statistics, along with an analysis of the risk factors for delinquency, will be provided in order to illustrate the important areas that should be addressed in successful programs. Testimonies, including personal interviews with those who have experience working at the RI Training School, DCYF, Boys' Town, Child and Family Services will be shared as evidence of the research found. Finally, recommendations based on the findings will be proposed.

Sex offender registration laws are very controversial. All fifty states require adult sex offenders to register. Twenty-eight states have extended registration and community notification requirements to juveniles (Hiller, 1998). These states seem to have failed to look at the uniqueness of juvenile sex offending. Juveniles have a very low recidivism rate and complex issues of culpability from age-of-consent laws. Applying Megan's Law to juveniles could have considerable negative consequences for juveniles' social development, particularly because one of the main stipulations of the law requires the juvenile to notify their school.
