The purpose of this study is to take a deeper look into the perceived benefits on host communities of short-term Alternative Spring Break programs associated with higher education institutions. A majority of the current literature is specifically student-development focused with regard to the impact of Alternative Spring Break trips. Kiskeya Reimagined brings together Dominican and Haitian communities to watch a film documentary on specific causes to the historic conflict between the two societies; allowing for community reflections and expert panel discussions. The research uses conflict theory to describe the opposition between Dominicans and Haitians as a problem between class systems and colonial powers using their capital and racism as a tool to change the history of the island and manipulate the general population. In an effort to identify barriers to stronger police-youth relationships, this study looks at whether there is a potential contrast in the way police officers and youth view the role of police in communities. An extensive review of literature was conducted to examine how policing practices may influence the way officers view their role in addition to the way youth perceptions of police are shaped. Every person, regardless of their age, race, sex, class, disability or religion should have access and the resources needed to be an active participant in their community. The goal of this project is to highlight the importance of creating opportunities for the aging population to be involved in community initiatives and in particular, environmental initiatives. This project is meant to create awareness of senior’s role and capabilities to be active in a community, potential barriers older adults face in participation and the importance of acknowledging and including older adults in community conversations that have the potential to impact their future.
