Civic engagement has become an institutional priority in higher education internationally. Many institutions of higher education have created partnerships with local and regional communities to advance their engagement agendas. This article explores the international landscape of civic engagement in higher education and identifies its various manifestations. The article also describes approaches to engagement, including experiential education, and highlights the pedagogy of service learning. Further, the article delineates 13 indicators of engagement, encompassing roles for the institution’s administrators, faculty, and students as well as community members.
