Community Initiatives Multiply University Partnerships, Christopher Lafontaine

Christopher LaFontaine is a senior studying psychology and sociology at Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne (IPFW). He has concentrated on community engagement and service learning as areas of focus for the past year. He plans to pursue a career in applied sociology and he has been involved with applied research among vulnerable populations. Christopher has worked with homeless veterans in Fort Wayne and has studied health conditions in a rural county that ranks low in health outcomes. In this article, he describes his experience with service-learning partnerships between community organizations and an institution of higher education.

The City of Fishers created a program (RISE: Reentry Initiative through Structured Employment) to recruit motivated employees into public works positions and aid rehabilitation of citizens who are faced with finding meaningful employment after paying their debt to society. After completing a training regimen developed by the city, they’re offered an opportunity to apply for full-time employment. Join us to learn about this innovative program.

Engagement & Service-Learning Summit
This presentation describes a collaboration between IPFW and Blackford County Concerned Citizens (BCCC) that spans multiple courses over a two year timeframe. BCCC is concerned about improving public health. Residents have higher rates of colon, thyroid and bladder cancers than other counties in the state of Indiana. BCCC has been investigating possible pollution in soil, water and now air in relation to the industrial history in the county. Students helped map the industrial history, and assisted BCCC with testing water and soil for industrial contaminants. Students are now assisting with testing moss samples as a surrogate for air contaminants in …
