Parental child abduction is a social problem that has an impact on a growing number of families. lt is now likely that social workers will encounter families affected by parental child abduction at some point during the course of their practice. To best serve these families, social workers need to be knowledgeable about parental child abduction and about strategies available to respond to the myriad of related issues. Social Support For Family Caretakers Of The Chronically Mentally Ill, Gina L. Bankes

The present study examined the relation between coping style, social support, family member symptom severity, and negative affect. Fifty-one caretakers of chronically mentally ill family members completed a demographic questionnaire, a general appraisal questionnaire, a family member symptom severity questionnaire, the Coping Strategy Indicator, the Social Support Questionnaire, and the Multiple Affect Anxiety Checklist. Caretakers with family members living at home were different than caretakers with family members living away from home (HOME) in several respects. Controlling for HOME, family member symptom severity was related to negative affect, coping strategies were related to negative affect and the Social Support Questionnaire …

The research reported in this paper is an effort to shed empirical light on traditional accountability in a cross-cultural perspective. Because of the suspicion of a connection between the persistence of the issue in the United States and indigenous cultural factors (most notably the uniquely enduring influence of the Protestant ethic) it was decided to investigate the issue through a comparison of some of the accountability practices of American social agencies with those outside the United States. Shame And Public Dependency: A Literature Review, Norman L. Wyers

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

All research related to under-utilization of income maintenance programs as well as to their impact on recipients has discovered the presence of stigma. A survey of the pertinent literature points out that much is known about stigmatization but that social welfare has been slow to incorporate this knowledge in any attempt to reduce the destructive effect of stigma on program users. Both liberal and radical reform measures are proposed as remedies.
