African American Caregiver Burden: Stress Factors And Utilization Of Services, Lorna Jean Levias

The project attempted to understand what factors create the highest levels of stress for African-American caregivers. Quantitative data was gathered from a self-administered questionnaire given to caregivers that attend Inland Caregiver Resource Center and take their loved ones to a Davita Dialysis center in the Riverside area. Participants were asked to complete the Caregiver Burden Scale (CBS) and additional questions regarding demographics and community services known and used by the caregiver. The findings indicated that the age of the patient receiving care and the lack of attendance at any type of support group were the two elements which markedly contributed …

The purpose of this qualitative study is to gain insight into the needs of children with ADHD from the perspective of teachers. Interviews were conducted either face-to-face or by telephone with teacher participants provided by Sylvan Learning Center and through snowball sampling. Findings of this study are expected to give social workers an opportunity to work collaboratively with teachers, parents and mental health professionals in applying a multimodal approach toward developing effective treatment strategies for children with ADHD.

The study provided a compilation of services and resources available through Cameron Hill Aftercare Services in San Bernardino for emancipated foster youth to assist with the successful transition toward independence as well as access to higher education and stability in housing and employment.

This study will contribute to the profession of social work by assessing services provided to persons with HIV/AIDS in regards to spirituality as a coping mechanism. A goal of this study is to encourage social workers to examine their own viewpoints regarding spirituality as a coping mechanism for clients with HIV/AIDS and how well they integrate this method of coping into treatment. Service providers within this population will be able to evaluate and improve their use of a client's spirtual world view as a tool for coping with iving with HIV/AIDS.

As the number of children in foster care without a familial placement continues to grow, the child welfare system is turning towards a new placement approach called Residential Treatment Foster Care. This study performed a process evaluation of 30 Residential Treatment Foster Care facilities in Los Angeles County that explored the four characteristics of case plan design, team decision-making, therapeutic intervention, staff training, and overall treatment effectiveness with regards to the number of Absences Without Leave (AWOL) and completion of treatment plan.

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in caregiver burden and use of coping strategies by gender, ethnicity, relationship to the care-receiver, type of diagnosis and length of caregiving responsibilities. Quantitative data was obtained through a sample survey of 55 random caregivers served by Inland Caregiver Resource Center (ICRC). The study shows the need for agencies to develop education classes and workshops which are based upon different coping strategies as well as caregiver support groups.

This dissertation is an exploratory, mixed methods study using grounded perspective to examine how stakeholders (including consumers, administrators, and practitioners) in social welfare organizations perceive effectiveness in the nonprofit social welfare sector. Focus groups were held in eight regions constituting the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) in Kentucky. A total of 25 people participated in the study. A theoretical framework of nonprofit social welfare organizational effectiveness emerged from the data indicating that the five most significant factors identified by stakeholders as constituting effectiveness in the nonprofit social welfare sector in Kentucky were (a) client services, (b) organizational structure (c) workplace …

In this paper, I respond to comments by Henggeler, Schoenwald, Borduin, and Swenson [Henngeler, S. W., Schoenwald, S. K., Borduin, C. M., & Swenson, C. C. (this issue). The Littell paper: Methodological critique and meta-analysis as Trojan horse. Children and Youth Services Review, doi: 10.1016/j.childyouth.2005.07.001] on my recent article, “Lessons from a systematic review of Multisystemic Therapy”. I identify factual and logical errors in their response, show how relevant research has been misinterpreted and misrepresented, and suggest constructive new directions for Multisystemic Therapy and the evidence-based practice movement.
