The purpose of this study was to explore whether social work students could increase their clinical skills knowledge in a Clinical Skills Virtual Learning Environment (CS-VLE). The evaluation of an online exercise that was developed using experiential learning theory and other learning theories was seen as being the first step in challenging a noted theme within social work academia concerning the effectiveness of online environments in teaching clinical skills. This study assessed changes in knowledge, produced by exposure to a web-based clinical skills environment. A non-experimental, survey design was used to determine which factors influence a lesbian woman's decision to have, or not have, a child. Data was collected via the internet from 373 adult women, who self identify as lesbian. This study was guided by feminist theory and attempts to connect existing empirical literature regarding decision making with the experiences of lesbian women. Review of existing theoretical and empirical literature regarding decision making and lesbian headed families showed that six factors; family of origin support, extrinsic religiosity, perceived ability to parent, internalized homophobia, perceived impact of motherhood, and fear of prejudice and discrimination …

This study explored the role of the family, employer and agent of employment as determinant to employment for people with disabilities in Monterey, Mexico. The main purpose of this study was to contribute to the equitable integration of people with disabilities into the labor force. The researcher used a case study approach that employed in-depth interviews of 27 participants and grounded theory procedures for data analysis. The key categories and themes that emerged and characterized each case study were cross-cased; the process contributed to the identification of key categories that formed the central tenets that influenced the job placement system. …

The purpose of this study was to identify the main predicting developmental assets for the prevention of juvenile delinquency among Hispanic youth in Texas by adopting advanced research methods. According to Benson (1995), and Lerner and Benson (2003), developmental assets are building blocks of development that help young people grow-up to be healthy, caring, and responsible. This secondary data study focuses on the outcome differences of Hispanic, African American, and Caucasian adults with out-of-home care experiences as children. Centering on Hispanics as the reference group, the investigation tested the outcome success of 810 adults in areas of physical and mental health, education, and finance domains. The overall success of the outcomes for each race/ethnic group was also assessed using an integrated outcome composite success construct. The purpose of this qualitative study was to obtain a deeper understanding of Puerto Rican women between the ages of 18 - 35 with a cocaine and heroin problem. This study was designed to identify and describe common issues (specific problems, and personal/ social characteristics, factors contributing to drug use) in the lives of these young women, their backgrounds, and life experiences, and to examine the social problems that these young women face as a result of their involvement with cocaine and heroin. Child abuse and neglect is a compelling phenomenon that has been attributed to a multitude of factors including maternal substance abuse. A significant number of the women involved with the child welfare system for child abuse or neglect are found to have issues due to substance abuse or dependency. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the impact of a Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)-based treatment program on subjects levels of risk for alcohol and drug abuse as measured by the Substance Abuse Questionnaire (SAQ). This will be done while controlling for level of religiosity. The researcher will identify any association between different mental disorders as measured by the Millon Clinical Multi-axial Inventory-III (MCMI-III) and levels of religiosity. This study will focus on two dimensions of religiosity importance of religion and frequency of religious service attendance as reported by the participants.

The survey interview has been recognized as the most frequently used data collection procedure in the social sciences (Dijkstra & van der Zouwen, l987). Although the survey interview is an essential methodological tool in social science research, it is fraught with problems of validity and reliability. To help understand why women are at greater risk for developing posttraumatic stress disorder than men, this dissertation qualitatively explores a conceptual model that incorporates key components of Cognitive-Behavioral theories within the context of social experiences specific to the respective genders. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an online prevention exercise. The rigorous evaluation of one online exercise using controlled school environment was seen as the first step in understanding the potential of online activities to help teens prevent substance abuse. This study assessed changes in knowledge, attitudes, normative beliefs, perceived behavioral control, and intention to change behavior produced by exposure to a Web-based anger management exercise. This research study presents a comparative analysis to examine classroom environments and child developmental outcomes across three early intervention models that serve children living in low-income families. Two long standing early intervention programs, Head Start and state-mandated Prekindergarten, are used as comparison groups to compare classroom environment and child outcomes with a collaboration known as Ready Start, a combination program serving children with a half day of Prekindergarten and a half day of Head Start. This study was a secondary analysis designed to examine the ecological system indicators of child maltreatment potential. A total of 263 families living within 200% of the poverty level were included in the sample. Results of the study revealed the exosystem indicator of social support had the greatest impact on child maltreatment while maltreatment of the parent as a child (history of maltreatment), an ontogenic system indicator, was the second highest predictor. Additionally, these two indicators were highly correlated within the structural model. The microsystem indicator of parental educational attainment and the macrosystem indicator of belief in corporal punishment had …

This study evaluated how BSW students at two Texas universities, one publicly funded and one privately funded, perceive their level of preparedness, comfort and the importance of addressing / using religion and spirituality in social work. In this study 41 students nearing the completion of their baccalaureate degree and enrolled in a field placement, were invited to complete a multi-faceted questionnaire consisting of 92 very specific questions. Of the 41 students invited to participate in the study, all subjects chose to complete the questionnaire.
