Lessons Learned: Feasibility Of A Discussion Prompting Tool To Increase Fertility Risk Discussion Among Adolescent Oncology Families, Devin Murphy, Caprice A. Knapp, Kelly K. Sawczyn, Susan T. Vadaparampil Ph.D, Alice Rhoton-Vlasak, Gwendolyn P. Quinn

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of distributing a prompting tool (stress egg) in order to increase discussions about fertility risk and preservation (FP) among female adolescent oncology patients, parents, and healthcare providers (HCP). 200 eggs were distributed to four pediatric oncology centers. Qualitative interviews were completed with healthcare staff (N=7) after 6 months of distribution to newly diagnosed female oncology patients ages 12-18. Interviews showed that the main barriers to distribution of the prompt were: forgetting to distribute the eggs; uncertainty about the significance of fertility; and uncertainty about fertility issues in general for female …

Applying Constant Comparative Method With Multiple Investigators And Inter-Coder Reliability, Joel D. Olson, Chad Mcallister, Lynn D. Grinnell, Kimberly Gehrke Walters, Frank Appunn

The Qualitative Report

Building on practice, action research, and theory, the purpose of this paper is to present a 10-step method for applying the Constant Comparative Method (CCM) of grounded theory when multiple researchers perform data analysis and meaning making. CCM is a core qualitative analysis approach for grounded theory research. Literature suggests approaches for increasing the credibility of CCM using multiple researchers and inter-coder reliability (ICR), but documentation of methods for collaboration on CCM data analysis is sparse. The context for developing the10-step CCM approach was a qualitative study conducted to understand the impact of webcams on a virtual team. To develop …

Relationships Between Different Types And Modes Of Arts-Related Experiences, Motivation, And Civic Engagement, Donald J. Polzella, Jeremy S. Forbis Jan 2016

Relationships Between Different Types And Modes Of Arts-Related Experiences, Motivation, And Civic Engagement, Donald J. Polzella, Jeremy S. Forbis

Psychology Faculty Publications

We successfully replicated our previous findings and can now conclude with a high level of confidence that individuals who attend traditional live musical performances are more likely to engage in pro-social behaviors, e.g., making charitable donations or volunteering, attending community meetings or voting.

Individuals who attended other live arts-related events, e.g., dance, theater, art exhibitions, and nontraditional music performances, were also more likely to engage in pro-social behavior. This finding suggests that the relationship holds irrespective of the artistic domain.

The findings suggested that the link between exposure to the arts and pro-social behavior is based primarily on the social characteristics …

Using Data Mining To Predict The Occurrence Of Respondent Retrieval Strategies In Calendar Interviewing: The Quality Of Retrospective Reports, Robert Belli, L. Dee Miller, Tarek Al Baghal, Leen-Kiat Soh

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Determining which verbal behaviors of interviewers and respondents are dependent on one another is a complex problem that can be facilitated via data-mining approaches. Data are derived from the interviews of 153 respondents of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) who were interviewed about their life-course histories. Behavioral sequences of interviewer-respondent interactions that were most predictive of respondents spontaneously using parallel, timing, duration, and sequential retrieval strategies in their generation of answers were examined. We also examined which behavioral sequences were predictive of retrospective reporting data quality as shown by correspondence between calendar responses with responses collected in prior …

Topic Analysis Of Tweets On The European Refugee Crisis Using Non-Negative Matrix Factorization, Chong Shen Jan 2016

Topic Analysis Of Tweets On The European Refugee Crisis Using Non-Negative Matrix Factorization, Chong Shen

CMC Senior Theses

The ongoing European Refugee Crisis has been one of the most popular trending topics on Twitter for the past 8 months. This paper applies topic modeling on bulks of tweets to discover the hidden patterns within these social media discussions. In particular, we perform topic analysis through solving Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) as an Inexact Alternating Least Squares problem. We accelerate the computation using techniques including tweet sampling and augmented NMF, compare NMF results with different ranks and visualize the outputs through topic representation and frequency plots. We observe that supportive sentiments maintained a strong presence while negative sentiments such …

These communities as case of informal economy initially do not have formal attributed rules. It is essential to find out (1) which rules and mechanisms exist in this type of economy; (2) what motivates people who are not acquainted with another to exchange gifts; and (3) understand the way this community exists. The conclusion is drawn that social capital is the basic engine of …

Interviewing Adolescent Females In Qualitative Research, Carmen S. Dixon Dec 2015

Interviewing Adolescent Females In Qualitative Research, Carmen S. Dixon

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative interviewing is widely used in educational research. However, while research related to effective interview strategies for use with many different population groups exists, the study of successful interview strategies for use with adolescent girls has been limited. To address this limitation, the researcher explores the various methodologies of qualitative interviewing, selects the most appropriate for her study, then outlines three important considerations for this population group: Ethical issues, power dynamics, and building trust. After discussing how these issues can best be addressed, the researcher includes reflections made after conducting two interviews each with eight adolescent females. The interview approach …

A Review Of Ethnotheatre: Research From Page To Stage, Andrea E. Lypka

The Qualitative Report

In Ethnotheatre: Research from Page to Stage (2011), Johnny Saldaña establishes ethnotheatre as a research method and art form in qualitative inquiry. Envisioned as an ethnotheatre book, various aspects of arts-based inquiry are intertwined in the six chapters, including ethical issues, artistic performance, adaptations of empirical materials in theatrical plays, monologue and dialogue construction, scriptwriting, theatrical design, production rights, copyright registration, and aesthetic language. Drawing on theatre-based studies, each chapter is grounded in literature and provides step-by-step guidelines to how traditional research and data can be reinterpreted, staged, performed, produced, and disseminated as theatrical play. Qualitative Contributions To A Randomized Controlled Trial Addressing Hiv/Aids-Stigma In Medical Students, Melissa Marzán-Rodríguez, Nelson Varas-Diaz, Torsten Neilands Dec 2015

Qualitative Contributions To A Randomized Controlled Trial Addressing Hiv/Aids-Stigma In Medical Students, Melissa Marzán-Rodríguez, Nelson Varas-Diaz, Torsten Neilands

The Qualitative Report

Specialized training for healthcare professionals (HCP) in order to reduce HIV/AIDS related stigma must be part of a public health model for HIV/AIDS. Tested interventions to reduce HIV/AIDS related stigma among HCP have been mostly absent from these efforts. A qualitative approach was used to assess stigma reduction within a traditional randomized controlled design in order to better understand how our current stigma intervention worked and was understood by 2nd year medical students. After conducting a quantitative follow up survey one-year post intervention we conducted 20 in-depth qualitative interviews with a subsample of our intervention group participants as part of …

It examines the largely ignored impact white activists have had on the BLM movement and also explores the history of white activists in the abolitionist and Civil Rights movements. The climax details a highly-publicized spat between rival Black Lives Matter organizations that happened during a Dec. 4 protest to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Officer Daniel Pantaleo's non-indictment in Garner's death. My main character, a white male, was blamed for causing the rift and was asked to step down from his leadership position in …
