Between Paradigms: Becoming A Pathological Optimist, Carol Isaac Aug 2017

Between Paradigms: Becoming A Pathological Optimist, Carol Isaac

The Qualitative Report

Using an autoethnographic poststructural lens, I examined my academic journey in becoming a qualitative methodologist. I integrated my mentor’s maxims such as, “the institution will not love you back,” “prisoner of your words,” “make plans; if they don’t work, make new plans,” “one has mentors and tormentors and both help shape us,” “ever the opportunist,” “strategic groveling,” “a mosaic approach to mentoring” and “just get naked.” Despite paradigmatic contradictions between my doctoral and postdoctoral experiences, I gained much from working between the polarities of the social science and biomedical discourse. In time, I became a “pathological optimist,” one of the …

Latino And Non-Latino White Parents’ Experiences Raising Their Child With Asd: An Exploratory Study, Nicole Casillas, Debra Vigil, Hui-Ting Wang Aug 2017

Latino And Non-Latino White Parents’ Experiences Raising Their Child With Asd: An Exploratory Study, Nicole Casillas, Debra Vigil, Hui-Ting Wang

The Qualitative Report

There is a dearth of research about the experiences of the Latino population in raising a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This includes a lack of cross-cultural perspectives and perspectives from fathers. Although there are similar experiences in raising a child with ASD among parents, we hypothesize that there will be different experiences due to culture. The current study is an exploratory qualitative research design, where we sought to understand the experiences of Latino and non-Latino White parents who are raising a child with ASD. Results indicated similarities across all families that include: self-efficacy beliefs, challenges, stress and coping, …

Critical Keys To Successful Offender Reentry: Getting A Handle On Substance Abuse And Mental Health Problems, Elaine Gunnison, Jacqueline B. Helfgott Aug 2017

Critical Keys To Successful Offender Reentry: Getting A Handle On Substance Abuse And Mental Health Problems, Elaine Gunnison, Jacqueline B. Helfgott

The Qualitative Report

Over the past several decades, all facets of institutional and community corrections have been growing. This growth has resulted in increased numbers of ex-offenders reentering society. While research has emerged on reentry, much of the research has focused on examining reentry failure as opposed to reentry success. Interviews of 40 ex-offenders and community corrections officers were conducted in Washington State to pinpoint what is needed to assist ex-offenders as they reenter society—particularly as it relates to substance abuse and mental health treatment. Results from interviews revealed that ex-offenders need assistance to address substance abuse and mental health issues while incarcerated …

Intersecting Autoethnographies: Two Academics Reflect On Being Parent-Researchers, Rosemary G. Bennett 086385, Peter De Vries Dr Aug 2017

Intersecting Autoethnographies: Two Academics Reflect On Being Parent-Researchers, Rosemary G. Bennett 086385, Peter De Vries Dr

The Qualitative Report

This article presents two intersecting autoethnographies generated by two academics working in the same university, who were both parent-researchers. We researched aspects of our own children’s lives, primarily in the home focusing on their engagement with dance and music. As autoethnographers we engaged in shared and individual systematic sociological introspection. In this inquiry we employed observation, copious field notes, video and photographic recording to gather longitudinal data about often unpredictable moments of creative arts engagement that occurred in the home setting. Our research provided a unique window into child directed dance and music behaviours which are rarely seen and which …

Institutional Control Of Social Studies Teaching As Phronesis: A Multi-Case Study, Austin Pickup Aug 2017

Institutional Control Of Social Studies Teaching As Phronesis: A Multi-Case Study, Austin Pickup

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents findings from a multi-case study of social studies educators which focused on the impact of institutional requirements on social studies teaching as phronesis. The concept of phronesis, or practical wisdom of human values, occupies a central space in this study, acting as both the theoretical and methodological framework. As a theoretical framework, Aristotle’s articulation of phronesis, and its distinction from the intellectual states of episteme and techne, guided the development of research questions and acted as an entry point for analysis of participant data concerning the impact of school-based requirements on social studies teaching. As a methodological …

A Cross-Sectional Exploration Of Household Financial Reactions And Homebuyer Awareness Of Registered Sex Offenders In A Rural, Suburban, And Urban County., John Charles Navarro Aug 2017

A Cross-Sectional Exploration Of Household Financial Reactions And Homebuyer Awareness Of Registered Sex Offenders In A Rural, Suburban, And Urban County., John Charles Navarro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As stigmatized persons, registered sex offenders betoken instability in communities. Depressed home sale values are associated with the presence of registered sex offenders even though the public is largely unaware of the presence of registered sex offenders. Using a spatial multilevel approach, the current study examines the role registered sex offenders influence sale values of homes sold in 2015 for three U.S. counties (rural, suburban, and urban) located in Illinois and Kentucky within the social disorganization framework. Homebuyers were surveyed to examine whether awareness of local registered sex offenders and the homebuyer’s community type operate as moderators between home selling …

Beliefs And Attitudes Toward Intimate Partner Violence In A Group Of Young Puerto Ricans, David Perez-Jimenez, Soélix M. Rodríguez-Medina, Francisco J. Rodríguez-León

The Qualitative Report

In this paper we aim to describe the beliefs and attitudes young people in Puerto Rico have toward intimate partner violence (IPV). Although Puerto Rico has a high rate of IPV, little empirical research has been conducted about the beliefs and attitudes people have regarding this issue. We conducted 20 in-depth qualitative interviews with young men and women. Data was analyzed using the qualitative content analysis approach. Participants expressed that men are more violent than women because of testosterone, machismo, and alcohol and other drug use. Both male and female participants stated that they believe they have the same rights …

International Students’ Transition Experiences In Rural Texas: A Phenomenological Study, Ian Lertora, Richard C. Henriksen Jr., Jesse Starkey, Chi-Sing Li

The Qualitative Report

Due to the growth in the number of international students attending universities in Texas and the need to provide appropriate counseling services to them, nine international students were interviewed about their experiences of transitioning from their home country to college in rural Texas. The authors employed the transcendental phenomenological approach to qualitative research (Moustakas, 1994) which allowed for the following seven emergent themes were identified that described the participants’ experiences: American TV; Knowing Someone; Like a Movie; Everybody Saying Hi; Transportation is Inconvenient; I Miss Noodles; and Being Optimistic. The emergent themes provided the basis for implications and recommendations for …

Evaluating Financial Planning Advertisements For Retirement In India: A Content Analysis, Ritu Gupta, Sudeepta Pradhan Jul 2017

Evaluating Financial Planning Advertisements For Retirement In India: A Content Analysis, Ritu Gupta, Sudeepta Pradhan

The Qualitative Report

For Indians, retirement is neither a formal stage of life nor an issue that people dwell upon while planning their future. Despite the lack of preparation for retirement, a burgeoning population indicates a huge mass of retirees in the coming decades. These statistics trigger the need for individuals to prepare for their retirement appropriately, while accounting for factors like inflation. To highlight the significance of retirement planning and create awareness among the masses, pre-requisites to retirement planning should be effectively communicated. Extant literature suggests advertising to be one such measure of effective communication. This study intended to capture the extent …

The Qualitative Report

Being ostracized can be painful for most people, but for those who experience this persistently it can lead to severe levels of psychological distress. At present, there is a scarcity of qualitative research which focuses on this group of vulnerable individuals. This paper acts as a guide for the novice researcher who plans to research this population.

To Think Or Not To Think With Theory In Qualitative Research, Mohamed Yacoub Jul 2017

To Think Or Not To Think With Theory In Qualitative Research, Mohamed Yacoub

The Qualitative Report

Thinking with Theory in Qualitative Research: Viewing Data across Multiple Perspectives is a book that challenges the traditional way of analyzing qualitative data. The book invites researchers who use qualitative methods to think with theory when it comes to analyzing their data since analyzing the data with no theory in mind can make injustice to the data. Thinking with theory, however, can enrich one’s study and direct the process of the data analysis. The authors offer us six theories, as examples, to think with when analyzing qualitative data. These theories are: Derrida’s Deconstruction, Spivak’s Marginality, Foucault’s Power/Knowledge, Butler’s Performativity, Deleuze’s …

Using “Tapestries” To Document The Collective Mathematical Thinking Of Small Groups, Alayne Armstrong Jun 2017

Using “Tapestries” To Document The Collective Mathematical Thinking Of Small Groups, Alayne Armstrong

The Qualitative Report

A challenge in mathematics education research has been to document the complex nature of collective mathematical learning. This paper describes a method of data analysis that offers a visual representation of collective discourse during mathematical tasks. Using data extracts from a study of small groups in a middle years classroom, I color code collective utterances to create a “tapestry,” a type of transcript that offers researchers the ability to move between individual and collective planes of focus during analysis. The nature of collective thinking is revealed by tapestries, including how utterances bump against each other, the role of utterances evolves …

General, Target, And Accessible Population: Demystifying The Concepts For Effective Sampling, Nestor Asiamah, Henry Kofi Mensah, Eric Fosu Oteng-Abayie Jun 2017

General, Target, And Accessible Population: Demystifying The Concepts For Effective Sampling, Nestor Asiamah, Henry Kofi Mensah, Eric Fosu Oteng-Abayie

The Qualitative Report

In this paper the concepts of general, target and accessible population are explained in response to misconceptions and controversies associated with them, and the fact that the relationships between them have not been explained in the context of qualitative enquiry in any formal study. These concepts are discussed in this study based on a general scenario. We basically attempt to explain the importance of specifying the general, target and accessible populations in a qualitative study when the study population is large. The study depicts how the research goal, contexts and assumptions can dictate the content and concentration of the target …

Boxing Culture And Serious Leisure Among North-American Youth: An Embodied Ethnography, Nuno F. Ribeiro Jun 2017

Boxing Culture And Serious Leisure Among North-American Youth: An Embodied Ethnography, Nuno F. Ribeiro

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, I discuss how I followed in the footsteps of Loïc Wacquant (2004) and took a closer and personal look at boxing as a leisure activity, from the point of view of those who participate in it, using embodied ethnography as the means of research. I was curious as to how and/or if leisure theory relates and applies to boxing, given the latter’s peculiar characteristics, which seem to equate it more with “work” than with “leisure.” I sought to answer a basic question, "Why do you box?" within these theoretical and methodological frameworks, and discovered that, while Robert …

Gaining Access To Socially Stigmatized Samples, Avon M. Hart-Johnson Phd Jun 2017

Gaining Access To Socially Stigmatized Samples, Avon M. Hart-Johnson Phd

The Qualitative Report

Gaining access to stigmatized populations using qualitative sampling requires the application of carefully planned strategies to avoid inadvertent slights to research participants. While there is a growing body of literature on qualitative sampling strategies, there is less discussion on how to manage the sensitivities of stigmatized research participants, such as African American females with incarcerated mates. This paper provides insight into how successful recruitment strategies, aligned with best practices described as checkpoints, enabled this researcher to gain access to a sample of 20 African American women who experienced grief and loss, and social withdrawal as a result of their mate’s …

Contextualizing The Young Adult Female Breast Cancer Experience: Developmental, Psychosocial, And Interpersonal Influences, Cameron Froude, Sandra Rigazio-Digilio, Laura Donorfio, Keith Bellizzi Jun 2017

Contextualizing The Young Adult Female Breast Cancer Experience: Developmental, Psychosocial, And Interpersonal Influences, Cameron Froude, Sandra Rigazio-Digilio, Laura Donorfio, Keith Bellizzi

The Qualitative Report

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women (American Cancer Society [ACS], 2016b). Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) as a group have a worse prognosis when compared to older adults (e.g., Tichy, Lim, & Anders, 2013). Due to limited understanding of the biology of cancers for AYAs, inadequate representation of AYAs in clinical trials, and AYAs’ unique psychosocial healthcare needs, the prognosis for this group, as compared to older women, is comparatively poor. One step in addressing the survival gap for AYAs is to explore the developmental and psychosocial factors that shape their illness experiences. This qualitative study …

A Descriptive Study Of The Elderly In California Substance Abuse Treatment Programs, David Berenschot Jun 2017

A Descriptive Study Of The Elderly In California Substance Abuse Treatment Programs, David Berenschot

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

As gerontologists may know, there are a great deal of studies and a variety of academic literature on the misuse of alcohol and prescription medication amongst the elderly population. While there is a plethora of information on alcohol and prescription misuse, there is little reported data about the prevalence of other substance misuse experienced by this population. This study aims to help to fill that gap in the data by using quantitative methods to describe the scope of substance abuse of individuals 55-years or older. This study utilizes data from the Treatment Data Set Admission (TEDS-A). The TEDS-A is a …

School Principals’ Views On Administration Work, Their “Frequent Turnover” And Its Effects On Their Work, Aydin Balyer

The Qualitative Report

School administrators’ “frequent turnover” has been discussed intensively in the Turkish Educational System recently. Currently, principals are selected for 4 years after an interview conducted by a committee of directors of national education. After that period, they either go back to their classes or are chosen for another 4 years for the last time. This frequent turnover can be disruptive for schools. This study was conducted to determine school principals’ views on administration work and this frequent turnover. The study employed a qualitative research design. The participants were 20 principals chosen with maximum sampling method. The data were analyzed with …

The Great Divide: A Review Of Paying For The Party, Amelia Hoyle May 2017

The Great Divide: A Review Of Paying For The Party, Amelia Hoyle

The Qualitative Report

Despite the ubiquitous presence of mass media hailing the value of higher education, these societal messages fail to acknowledge the complexity of contextual factors that influence the outcomes of college educated young adults. Through in-depth personal descriptions from students, the researchers Armstrong and Hamilton for Paying for the Party: How College Maintains Inequality examine the structure of academic and social life on a college campus, exploring the impact of the organization of college on student experiences during college and class trajectories at exit. While previous literature may describe a student’s inequality in college as simply a statistic, the qualitative nature …

When Culture Matters: Frame Resonance And Protests Against Femicide In Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Chelsea Starr May 2017

When Culture Matters: Frame Resonance And Protests Against Femicide In Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Chelsea Starr

The Qualitative Report

Framing theory in social movements is an analytical tool for examining the symbols, slogans, and underlying messages that provide the public with a way to interpret, or frame, a movement resonant with the host culture. The questions I pursue: Looking at how frame resonance varies between movements on the same issue, is there a difference in the movement’s success and failures based on use of different frames? Do frames matter? Using qualitative content analysis as a method and framing theory as an analytical perspective to guide the method, I examine the frames of five movement organizations protesting femicide in Ciudad …

A Woman As A Decision-Maker: Exploring The "Lived Experience" At Home And Outside, Ray Titus, Debashish Sengupta, Sahana Madan May 2017

A Woman As A Decision-Maker: Exploring The "Lived Experience" At Home And Outside, Ray Titus, Debashish Sengupta, Sahana Madan

The Qualitative Report

In this research paper, we look at decision-making by women in India from a contextual perspective. This study looks at decision making by women as based on four possible contexts that may arise, and where decisions are called for. These contexts are qualified based on two broad parameters, namely the level of involvement (dictated by the stakes at play) and the predisposition displayed. Involvement is qualified as high or low (on a continuum), whilst predisposition is stated as either cognitive or affective. The results of the research study reveal a difficult act of balancing that women have to do in …
