Regional Economic Indicators: Affordability And Quality Of Life, Iryna Lendel

This study aims to contrast affordability and quality of life as factors of attraction and retention of workforce and businesses in Northeast Ohio’s metro areas with comparable regions across the country. The study is limited to reliable and available data for 36 metropolitan areas from 27 states. As presented, this study serves two purposes: it allows us to compare Cleveland to other metro areas in selected indicators,1 and it creates a valuable database of variables and indicators on affordability and quality of life in 36 metro areas.

What is an employment center? McMillen (2003) defines an employment center as a “concentration of firms large enough to have significant effects on the overall spatial distribution of population, employment, and land prices.” Bogart (1998) sees employment centers as a collection of small open economies in a metropolitan area that specialize and trade with each other. Technically speaking, an employment center is a geographic area that exceeds a threshold employment density (employees per square mile) and a threshold employment level.

The City of Cleveland plans to create a long-term vision for industrial and commercial land reuse in order to better serve the business and neighborhood interests of its citizens. The implementation of an industrial land bank is one critical way in which to fulfill this goal. This study aimed to develop a strategy to aid the city in the operation and management of rehabilitating commercial and industrial properties for reuse. This study reports on the contribution made by Playhouse Square Center to Northeast Ohio. The contribution comes in various forms, which are reflected in the report’s different sections. The first uses a traditional economic model to estimate the economic impact of Playhouse Square Center. It calculates how each dollar spent by, or due to the presence of, Playhouse Square generates additional spending and jobs in the local economy. The second type of contribution is through the various educational programs and events aimed at increasing interest and involvement in the arts. Coastal decision-makers and training providers in the Ohio Lake Erie basin participated in seven focus groups to generate information on coastal resources knowledge and training needs. Six of the focus groups were comprised of a cross-section of professionals who make decisions affecting watershed areas or Lake Erie coastal areas (non-providers); the seventh was comprised of training providers (providers). Discussions centered on two main areas: core knowledge needs and training needs.

Strategic Development Of Airport And Rail Infrastructure: The Case Of Singapore, Sock-Yong Phang

This article recounts how a number of strategic infrastructure investment decisions in airport and rail development taken by the Singapore government were at variance with recommendations emerging from cost-benefit analysis, but were considered necessary to support external competitiveness. This link between infrastructure provision and economic development may require decision makers to assess the trade-off between prudent macro-economic planning and efficient micro-economic management for major projects. In the case of airport hubs, the most difficult assessment might be the game consideration of how much, and how far ahead, excess capacity is needed to ensure the dominance of the hub.

The economic value of an urban university to a metropolitan region is comprised of (1) the educational opportunities provided to students who rely on local institutions of higher education, (2) the unique contributions of urban universities to the social and political infrastructure of a region, and (3) the research and service contracts and other funds and philanthropic donations attracted to the campus by faculty and staff. If an urban university such as Cleveland State University (CSU) did not exist in the Cleveland metropolitan region, many, if not all of these economic and social contributions would be lost. First, survey industrial activity in the city of Cleveland using employment and payroll data for the period from 1993 to 2000; report on key findings related to industry sectors and industries at the two-digit standard industrial classification (SIC) code level; and compare the city of Cleveland to suburban Cuyahoga County and the remainder of the Cleveland primary metropolitan statistical area (PMSA). What Works in Economic Development reviews evaluation literature relevant to economic development strategies. While economic development programs are difficult to evaluate, the literature reveals important information about the level of success achieved by various programs. It also demonstrates how positive results can be realized. A “what works” matrix follows the review of the evaluation studies. This briefing paper provides an analysis of high-tech activity in the Cleveland Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area (PMSA) from 1992 to 2000. It begins by defining the term high-tech industry, using criteria developed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). High-tech industries are then analyzed from the viewpoint of employment levels, average earnings, and number of establishments. The City of Cleveland’s share of high-tech activity is discussed along with a comparison of the Cleveland PMSA versus the U.S. The paper concludes with a summary analysis of Cleveland’s position n in the world of high-tech.

This study describes the impact of GRC on the State of Ohio and on Northeast Ohio, where GRC is located. Northeast Ohio includes the eight counties in the Akron and Cleveland metropolitan areas.1 This report is an expansion and update of an earlier study, published in February 1996.2 As before, this study employs two methods to determine GRC’s influence on the state and local economies.
