Energy For Development: The Concept, Holmes J., Terry Van Gevelt
Energy For Development: The Concept, Holmes J., Terry Van Gevelt

Worldwide, 1.3 billion people remain without access to electricity and 2.7 billion are still cooking on harmful and inefficient stoves1 . Many live in remote rural village communities, and until they have access to energy services, little progress can be made to develop and improve their lives2 . As United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has stated, “energy is the golden thread that connects economic growth, increased social equity, and an environment that allows the planet to thrive”3 . Improving the lives of rural communities by developing smart villages is a concept analogous to the more familiar smart cities. The vision …
Where Does Bicycling For Health Happen? Analysing Volunteered Geographic Information Through Place And Plexus, Greg P. Griffin, Junfeng Jiao
Where Does Bicycling For Health Happen? Analysing Volunteered Geographic Information Through Place And Plexus, Greg P. Griffin, Junfeng Jiao
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Research on the role of bicycling for health through physical activity has been limited by the lack of information on where bicyclists ride. New big data sources available through smartphone-based applications provide a rich source to provide bicycle volume data more comparable to the scale of information available for automotive and public transit modes. In the case of smartphone apps for fitness tracking, results of this data can be used similar to the growing application of global positioning systems for automotive travel surveying. The authors evaluate data from Travis County, Texas for the purpose of determining where bicyclists ride, primarily …
Forensically Discovering Simulation Feedback Knowledge From A Campus Energy Information System, Clayton Miller, Arno Schlueter
Forensically Discovering Simulation Feedback Knowledge From A Campus Energy Information System, Clayton Miller, Arno Schlueter

Simulation model calibration has been long identified as a key means of reconciling the consumption and efficiency characteristics of buildings. A key step in this process is the creation of the actual diversity factor profiles for occupancy and various energy end uses such as lighting, plug-loads, and HVAC. Creation of these model inputs is conventionally a tedious process of site surveys, interviews or temporary sensor installation. Sometimes measured energy data can be used to create these schedules, however there are many challenges, especially when the sensor network available is large or unorganized. This paper describes a process applying a series …

Crowdsourcing Bicycle Volumes: Exploring The Role Of Volunteered Geographic Information And Established Monitoring Methods, Greg P. Griffin, Junfeng Jiao
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
The recent interest in performance measures and new bicycle infrastructure development has triggered rapid advancements in monitoring methods for active transportation, but comprehensive monitoring programs for the bicycle mode are far from ubiquitous. This study evaluates the use of GPS survey data and a new crowdsourced volume dataset that may offer promise to extend the reach of limited counting programs. The authors integrated count data from 5 separate trail locations in Austin, Texas, with a previous survey using the CycleTracks smartphone app, and a new data product derived from a larger-scale use of the Strava fitness app. New crowdsourced methods …
Multiscale Co-Simulation Of Energyplus And Citysim Models Derived From A Building Information Model, Daren Thomas, Clayton Miller, Jérôme Kämpf, Arno Schlueter
Multiscale Co-Simulation Of Energyplus And Citysim Models Derived From A Building Information Model, Daren Thomas, Clayton Miller, Jérôme Kämpf, Arno Schlueter
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
We present an approach for rapidly assessing the performance of early design stage building information models (BIM) from both the building and urban systems scale. This effort builds upon two previously developed tools, the Design Performance Viewer (DPV) and the CitySim urban simulation engine. It couples them to produce a more informed model. The DPV is a plugin for Autodesk Revit Architecture that creates a model for the EnergyPlus building performance engine based on information contained in the BIM. We combine the two simulation engines using the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) co-simulation framework to improve the accuracy of both simulations. …
Bim-Extracted Energyplus Model Calibration For Retrofit Analysis Of A Historically Listed Building In Switzerland, Clayton Miller, Daren Thomas, Silvia Domingo Irigoyen, Christian Hersberger, Zoltán Nagy, Dino Rossi, Arno Schlueter
Bim-Extracted Energyplus Model Calibration For Retrofit Analysis Of A Historically Listed Building In Switzerland, Clayton Miller, Daren Thomas, Silvia Domingo Irigoyen, Christian Hersberger, Zoltán Nagy, Dino Rossi, Arno Schlueter
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Building retrofit analysis in Switzerland traditionally relies on expert heuristics and best practices. These processes are not often supplemented by data or model-driven techniques that would enhance the accuracy and ability to quantify the impact of innovative technologies. We present a process of calibrated building energy model (BEM) analysis of a case study using a building information model (BIM) and measured data from a custom wireless sensor network. The case study is a mixed-use office and residential historically listed building in Zürich, Switzerland. A BIM model was first developed in Autodesk Revit and then extracted to an EnergyPlus model through …
Automation Of Common Building Energy Simulation Workflows Using Python, Clayton Miller, Christian Hersberger, Marcus Jones
Automation Of Common Building Energy Simulation Workflows Using Python, Clayton Miller, Christian Hersberger, Marcus Jones

A valuable skillset for building industry professionals is proficiency in high-level, scripting languages that can automate and perform many common repetitive or technically intensive tasks. This application-focused paper emphasizes the use of the Python programming language in various workflows common to the building performance modeling and simulation process. Python is an open, powerful, and easy-to-learn scripting language with an emphasis on programmer productivity. While the highlighted applications themselves are notably ordinary amongst building simulation practitioners, the novelty of this discussion is in the speed and usefulness of new Python libraries and data analysis techniques. Four short examples are illustrated: simulation …

Fast Tracks: A Comparison Of High Speed Rail In China, Europe And The United States, Junfeng Jiao, Jenna Harbin, Yuan Li
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
High speed rail systems have blossomed in technological advances since their debut in the 1960’s with the Japanese Shinkansen line. As miles upon miles of tracks increase around the world, bringing added mobility to travelers while decreasing emissions, various technologies are leading the way to a faster tomorrow. This article explores the differences in what countries around the world are using to supply the next generation of travel modes. This paper details the differences in technological implementations from Asia, Europe, and North America. High speed rail systems are far more developed in other countries, especially China, and have required substantial …

Grocery Shopping: How Individuals And Built Environments Influence Choice Of Travel Mode, Junfeng Jiao, Anne Vernez Moudon, Adam Drewnowski
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This research investigated the influences of socioeconomic characteristics of individual travelers and of the environments where the travelers live and shop on choice of travel mode for grocery shopping. The data on travel for grocery shopping came from 2,001 respondents to the 2009 Seattle Obesity Study survey in King County, Washington. Eighty-eight percent of the respondents drove to their grocery stores, whereas 12% used transit or taxis, walked, biked, or carpooled. The addresses of 1,994 homes and 1,901 primary grocery stores used by respondents were geographically coded. The characteristics of built environments in the neighborhoods around homes and grocery stores …

Modeling Of The Single Coil, Twin Fan Air-Conditioning System In Energyplus, Clayton Miller, Chandra Sekhar
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper outlines the conceptual development of a building energy simulation model for the Single Coil, Twin Fan Air Conditioning (SCTF) system in the whole building simulation program EnergyPlus. The SCTF system is a unitary, multi-zone system which conditions the outdoor ventilation and recirculated return air in two separate streams through a single compartmented cooling coil and supplies these unmixed streams via two variable speed fans and a dual duct arrangement to zonal mixing boxes. The main challenges addressed in EnergyPlus include the existing inability to concurrently simulate unmixed air streams within a centralized VAV system, supply and control outdoor …
Urban-Biased Policies And The Increasing Rural-Urban Expenditure Gap In Vietnam In The 1990s, Eric Fesselmeyer, Kien T. Le
Urban-Biased Policies And The Increasing Rural-Urban Expenditure Gap In Vietnam In The 1990s, Eric Fesselmeyer, Kien T. Le
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
There was a significant and widening rural-urban gap during the economic boom in Vietnam in the 1990s. Using an econometric decomposition, we find that differences in individual characteristics such as education, ethnicity and age are the primary explanation for this widening gap, whereas differences in the returns to these characteristics are the primary explanation for the increase in the gap at higher percentiles. We then argue that government investment policies and the manipulation of price incentives were important factors behind the gap. In particular, we argue that government policies created some benefit to urban dwellers at the expense of rural …
