Introduction And Background - Poverty In Metropolitan Richmond, John V. Moeser

Poverty in Metropolitan Richmond

For almost ten years, Dr. John Moeser, Senior Fellow of the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement, has been analyzing U.S. Census data to track poverty trends among the localities of metropolitan Richmond. He started this project to inform the public about the growth of impoverishment and its effect on every aspect of urban life. As word began to circulate about the study, Dr. Moeser was invited by public officials, business executives, heads of non-profit organizations, leaders in the faith community, and neighborhood-based associations to speak and lead discussions about poverty including the history associated with the concentration of poverty and …

[Introduction To] More Than Shelter: Activism And Community In San Francisco Public Housing, Amy L. Howard

Bookshelf

In the popular imagination, public housing tenants are considered, at best, victims of intractable poverty and, at worst, criminals. More Than Shelter makes clear that such limited perspectives do not capture the rich reality of tenants’ active engagement in shaping public housing into communities. By looking closely at three public housing projects in San Francisco, Amy L. Does Commuting Lead To Migration?, Xiaobing Shuai

School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications

The underlying reasons are that increased commuting costs or reduced migration costs can induce commuters to become migrants. These results may have useful implications for urban communities in their revitalization efforts, as cities can explore ways of attracting …

The Politics Of Annexation: Oligarchic Power In A Southern City, John V. Moeser, Rutledge M. Dennis

American central cities have long faced problems associated with population losses and deteriorating economies. As middle-class citizens move to the suburbs and as shopping centers and industry join them, the city experiences considerable difficulty raising money to fund the services needed by its growing low-income population. Just as the dwindling middle class produces strains in the city's economy, it also alters and reshapes the contours of the city's politics. This was particularly true of the 1960s since the vast majority of the out-migrants was white and a large proportion of the growing number of low-income city residents was black. Cities …
