Gender And Authority In The Public Sector: The Case Of Local Government Chief Administrative Officers In The United States, Sebawit G. Bishu

In 2016, women represented 16.6% of all Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) in local governments across the United States. Previous studies have investigated gender disparities in managerial representation, which is explained by the glass ceiling phenomenon; however, little is known about whether the women that occupy these male dominated positions have the similar levels of responsibilities as their male counterparts. Thus, the purpose of this dissertation is to understand if gender disparities in levels of work authority manifest as a new form of the glass ceiling. Work authority in this study is operationalized as CAOs’ sanctioning authority (control over personnel operations) …

In its 2015-2018 Strategy, the GICHD has reaffirmed its commitment to gender & diversity, and 2016 has cer-tainly been a year of accomplishments. In January 2016, the GICHD joined the International Gender Champions Network. In July 2016, the GICHD adopted its first Centre-wide Gender & Diversity Action Plan. In September, the GICHD created two positions on gender & diversity Programme Officer (30%) and Junior Programme Officer (50%). In addition to those three milestones, the GICHD has also been promoting gender & diversity by sharing its knowledge, holding events for GICHD staff and the public alike, and encouraging discussions and debates …

The Effects Of Gender And Perception Of Community Safety On Happiness, Jennifer K. Daffon

Income-based indicators of happiness have been shown to be limited in their ability to predict happiness. Alternative measures of happiness have been gaining prominence in happiness research, and two predictors of happiness were investigated in the current study. The extent to which happiness (measured by affect, life satisfaction, and psychological well-being) could be predicted by gender and perception of community safety was investigated with 19,644 participant responses to The Happiness Alliance Survey. Multiple linear regression models indicated that gender and community safety are significant predictors of affect, life satisfaction, and psychological well-being.
