Policies To Improve Quality In Virginia’S Nursing Homes: The Role Of Local Labor Markets, Lillian Pope
Policies To Improve Quality In Virginia’S Nursing Homes: The Role Of Local Labor Markets, Lillian Pope
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Nursing home quality of care has long been a policy concern. With invested interest from Medicaid as the primary payer for long-term care services, policy is continually being introduced at the state and local level to improve this quality of care. In Virginia, a Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) policy has been implemented to incentivize nursing facilities to perform well on six quality of care metrics. Previous research suggests VBP implementation and performance varies from facility to facility. How do local labor market conditions affect nursing home quality of care? In an attempt to fill the gap in the literature examining the …
Reset The Boundary: State Activism In Juvenile Transfer Reform, Yuchen Tang
Reset The Boundary: State Activism In Juvenile Transfer Reform, Yuchen Tang
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Law and policy are deeply intertwined. States themselves are the main venues to deliberate and implement policies that alter the status quo of juvenile transfer. The policymaking process in some states can increase our ability to understand and predict how others will similarly react. This learning model has been the foundation for juvenile justice reform where lessons are drawn from past successes or failures to keep more youths from incarceration. Legislative and judicial capacity to influence criminal justice reforms are complementary, and there is an ongoing debate on the designated function of the judiciary, whether it should be more active …

The Battle Between Expertise And Misinformation To Influence Public Opinion: A Focus On The Anti-Vaccination Movement, Alexandra Bongiorno
Undergraduate Honors Theses
How do experts and anti-vaccination advocates effectively influence public opinion? This study examines the role of experts and non-experts in influencing public opinion. In particular, I examine the relationships between social media, misinformation, and expert opinion and how these relationships impact individuals to form their opinions. Additionally, I measure individual components such as science education background, ideology, and social media use to determine the effects of personal factors on opinion formation. I …

The proper implementation of a curricular program is crucial in ensuring that the curricular content and learning intentions are delivered to students consistently and reliably. This being the case, it is essential that newly adopted curricular initiatives are evaluated for fidelity to the program's original standards. Currently, state and federal regulations require teachers to use instructional programs that have been shown to be effective through "scientifically based research" (Stavin, 2003). to satisfy the "scientifically based research" requirement of NCLB, curricular programs undergo rigorous efficacy and effectiveness testing to ensure that the program's standards are indeed valid. to further measure the …

"More Than Shelter": Community, Identity, And Spatial Politics In San Francisco Public Housing, 1938--2000, Amy L. Howard

During the second half of the twentieth century, scholars and journalists documented the failures of the public housing program in the United States with a range of studies focusing on the Midwest and East. Problems such as displacement, criminal activity, high vacancy rates, racial segregation, and the isolation of tenants informed critiques of federally-subsidized housing for low-income families. These aspects contributed to the national image of "the projects" as high-rise ghettos, populated primarily by African Americans, and located in run-down areas. Public housing with its position at the crossroads of national, state, and local politics and policies as well as …
