The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). SNAP is designed to provide assistance in purchasing food to low income households in the United States. In Maine, individual benefits are administered by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. Every yea,r many youth emancipate from foster care when they are no longer eligible to be in the system. These former foster youth need to be self reliant and able to support themselves. The role of independent living programs is to assist the foster youth to develop tools and skills that will be needed to lead self sufficient lives.
