Comparative Analysis Of State-Funded Rental Assistance Voucher Programs In Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, And New Jersey, Syann Mannings, Fernando A. Rendon-Lopez, Syann A. Mannings, Jason Mendelson

Senior Theses and Projects

The decline in support for public housing investment in the U.S. prompted the federal government to pivot towards tenant-based rental subsidies by establishing the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program, a revised version of Section 8, in 1998 (Edson, 2011). Through the HCV program, administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through Public Housing Authorities (PHAs), low-income households can receive rental subsidies without being locked into a neighborhood or rental unit, allowing for increased socio-economic mobility. Despite the federal government's rental assistance through the HCV program, limited funding and strict eligibility requirements make it challenging to meet the …

Lost Voices: Solutions For Achieving Gender Parity On Corporate Boards, Mary Tursi Apr 2020

Lost Voices: Solutions For Achieving Gender Parity On Corporate Boards, Mary Tursi

Senior Theses and Projects

Women have never gained a significant voice in corporate America, holding only 27% of the board seats on the S&P 500. Recently, an increasing number of Americans have grown to realize the inequity of this practice, resulting in a rise in female directors. However, this growth is slow and largely in need of a policy to speed up the process. Gender quotas have garnered the most attention, but political limitations make them largely unattainable in the United States. In order to assess viable alternatives, this thesis assembles a database on corporate practices and uses statistical models to predict what policies …

Ultimately, the answers to these questions are used to evaluate the level to which institutional administrators are committed to the Obama-era guidance in light of the new proposed guidance. In order to assess these questions, this thesis utilizes an IRB-approved survey about the proposed change in definition of sexual harassment, change in an …

College Women's Interest In An Over-The-Counter Oral Contraceptive, Haley Dougherty Apr 2018

College Women's Interest In An Over-The-Counter Oral Contraceptive, Haley Dougherty

Senior Theses and Projects

The purpose of this thesis was to learn whether an over-the-counter (OTC) oral contraceptive pill would benefit college students. To find out, I conducted sixteen semi-structured interviews with college students from Trinity College and Capital Community College, both located in Hartford, Connecticut. All participants either currently took oral contraceptives or had taken them in the past. This thesis accepts as its premise that oral contraceptives should be available OTC, but as a policy solution to increase access, I found that an OTC pill would have a limited effect.

Dismantling The Climate Denial Machine: Theory And Methods, David A. Mickolas Apr 2017

Dismantling The Climate Denial Machine: Theory And Methods, David A. Mickolas

Senior Theses and Projects

Many Americans do not believe in the existence of climate change, and even those who believe climate change exists often seriously underestimate its potential harms as predicted by the world's best scientific organizations. Most political scholars agree that much higher consensus among American citizens is necessary to create necessary policy reform to mitigate climate change, both in the US and at large. However, there are also organizations who actively wish to deter and decrease belief in climate change among US citizens, not for the sake of scientific skepticism, but for personal benefit from preventing policy reform. This text examines what …
